07 // warmth outro ft. @mosskena
listen now (link in bio) “warmth outro
i really wanted to use this mixtape to bring an end to the wild world era of our career. which we all really loved and felt so passionately about. i really wanted to try and pull it full circle, starting with the mixtape with the cover of cat stevens and finishing it with a new version of warmth which was all of our favourite song off the album. we all wished it would've been a single and for me its one of the most important songs we have ever written. i wanted to tie the two tracks together by producing them in the same way. moss kena is a brilliant artist and such an amazing singer, i asked him to adlib over the top of it to create atmosphere, we then asked charlie barnes to come in and play guitar. we tweaked the lyrics a bit to acknowledge that a few years have passed since the last album and that generally things have got a lot more complicated and confusing and it's a really fitting end to the mixtape. particularly the last line because the whole idea of the mixtape and our next album is about losing yourself in music and using it as an escape.” #oph4
06 // the descent ft. @lilymooremusic@mosskena@mrjacobbanks
listen now (link in bio) “the descent is a song that i wrote for wild world. its quite an angsty, angry put down song. i always loved the production, i always thought it should be a single and it ended up coming out on a very limited edition vinyl. i was really keen to use it to show off some of the most exciting uk voices that are around at the moment. so we invited lily moore and moss kena to sing on it and jacob banks - who i think is one of the most interesting and unique striking voices around at the moment. luckily for us they all said yes. i feel like its a track that we are super proud of. in the spirit of the mixtapes i wanted to segway off into a different tune. our mixtapes have always nodded towards future music that we haven't yet released so the song morphs into a version of million pieces which is a song that i am really excited for people to hear in the future, but i wanted to present it in a really different way. it really speaks to both wild world and the new album and where we want to go. these are the kind of easter eggs that make the mixtape what they are.” #oph4
05 // flowers
listen now (link in bio) “flowers came about from our absolute obsession with rationale, who we have been lucky enough to work with and collaborate with before. we decided together that the tune by sfa would be a really fun and interesting song to cover. t, rationale produced and recorded the version that you hear. he is one of the most talented producers and singers that we've ever met, he sent it over to us and i lived with it on my phone for about a year. totally obsessing over it and playing it to anyone that would listen. i added my vocals and we worked on the production with him.
our producer mark and i had been writing with james arthur at the time, who happened to be in the studio when we were working on flowers. we thought it'd be a really great opportunity to get him to be a part of it. i think james is one of the most underestimated impressive vocalists in the world. we asked him to sing a verse on the song and he did and we are super grateful. i wanted to take a back seat on this track and really show off how amazing rationale is and how brilliant a singer james arthur is.” #oph4
04 // don’t let go ft. @craigdavid@kianjamusic@swarmz_
listen now (link in bio) "we met craig a few years ago, co-presenting a radio show together. we are all huge fans of his and we grew up listening to his music and i awkwardly asked him if he'd be up for singing on one of our mixtapes. he said yes! and i ended up writing a song with him for his album which became a single, which was very surreal. we finally made him return the favour by coming in and working on this version of don't let go. one of the greatest songs of all time. i really wanted to show off craig's voice, i wanted him to do something interesting with it. we then added kianja into the situation and it was great to show how much on an incredible vocalist she is. it was super intimidating singing on a track with them but so much fun. the production took a minute, for the outro we wanted to go really over the top and cinematic, very other peoples heartache, i wanted it to go as epic and orchestral as possible and for charlie barnes who plays live with us to have a shredding guitar moment at the end of it. so all in all one of my favourite tracks on the mixtape. it just makes me feel really happy."
