#tbt my grandmother jane (to whom hot mess is dedicated) pitched her writing to @womansdaymag in 1961, according to this envelope and its contents. even though she went unpublished, i often say my two-book deal is really one for me and one for her. write on. — jane’s short story is about a 1950s family. the dad, dick, is hellbent on his son’s admission into harvard, while his son, richard, would like to be an artist. when richard announces he will be going to paris instead of attending school in the fall, his father denounces it and says he won’t pay a cent. that’s when richard’s mom, peg, chimes and and tells dick: “he will use my money.” i think this is a great, timely story of women empowerment even after all these years.
