It’s round two of #freshpickedfriday and since tomorrow is the #firstdayoffall 🍁, i thought i’d go with the most autumnal of all produce...pumpkin! 🎃 this gorgeous gourd is loaded with nutrients, including beta-carotene, which is vital for healthy 👀 and tons of fiber to keep your belly happy. 🍁 i happen to ❤️canned pumpkin for baking, but there are so many other uses for it (stew, ravioli, pasta sauce, casseroles). if you haven’t cooked a whole pumpkin before, don’t be intimidated. just don’t use the one you bought to decorate your porch! the big ones are too stringy and watery to make a good purée from. get a sweetie pie, cinderella or long island cheese variety. a 3-6 pound pumpkin is big enough to make a few pies 🥧 or several batches of muffins. look for my pumpkin stir on today.com for my all about pumpkin story, which breaks down everything you need to know to cook pumpkin 👩🍳 🎃 speaking of muffins, swipe to see my spice girl pumpkin muffins. the recipe for these amazing treats is in my profile. hurray for everything pumpkin!
I have been #nerdingout about the science behind #umami all day with this guy, @chefaz, one of my #foodheros and the host of the #worldumamiforum happening right now in #nyc. i’m learning so much about what creates #umami, including the much-maligned msg. event sponsored by @ajinomototaste. check out my ig story for more!
It’s #yomkippur and we’re all feeling #reflective, but like any mom, i look for opportunities to fit in things like #flushots, so that’s what we did today. docs are recommending getting them early this year because last season was so horrible. miss phoebe wasn’t on board, but she came around and was super brave😊 mom will be getting hers soon too!
Got to share the #eatingincolor message at a @healthination event tonight. love it when i can talk to a new group of folks (in this case, ad buyers) about why i wrote my #cookbook. my oldest kid was eating a bland, beige diet and i wanted to show her that eating colorful #fruitsandveggies was fun and 😋. turns out most grownups need to be encouraged to eat more plants too.
#september light is just perfection and today is perfect for getting out there and #movingyourbody! the rest of my day will be filled with taking the kids to the playground and gymnastics, so i’m grabbing some #metime now and enjoying my #post-run 🏃♀️#endorphins 😁 enjoy whatever makes you whole today!
I’m starting a little something today called #freshpickedfriday, where i’ll feature a #seasonalingredient, tell you all about how to choose and store it, why it’s great for you and i’ll also share some ideas for enjoying it😋
today’s #freshpick is #brusselssprouts! ✨send me ideas for ingredients you’d like to see here.
here we go: ✅how to choose: look for sprouts with tightly packed green leaves without holes or discoloration. choose a uniform size so they cook evenly.
✅store it: sprouts will keep in a plastic bag in the fridge for up to 4 days. wash well before using.
✅good stuff: brussels sprouts are loaded with #anticancer proerties thanks to #glucosinolates. they also contain #vitaminc#folate and #potassium.
✅use it: trim the ends of the sprouts and discard loose leaves. you can roast, steam or #stirfry the sprouts. slide over to the next image to see my sautéed brussels sprouts with orange and walnuts. grab the #recipe in my profile!
