#regram@ticktock_world 🗣 “good 👏 news 👏 for 👏 your 👏 friday 👏 evening 🤗. starting january 1st, plastic straws will only be available upon request at full service restaurants in california. 🍴 while plastic straws are just one of many single-use plastics we should aim to move away from, this is an important (and inclusive*) first step to support the global movement for a #strawlessocean. ❌🥤 join the movement and text plasticfree to 40649 as your pledge to #stopsucking on plastic.💪 *some of our friends and family with disabilities do require a plastic straw to drink. always champion accessibility in the movement for a #strawlessocean. #environmentalismnotableism”
"we know plastic ... is literally choking our lakes and rivers and we have to take steps to stop that or we'll have more plastic pollution than fish by 2050.” 👏🗣 @catherinemckennaottcen
this week in halifax, delegates representing the #g7 gathered to discuss the ocean plastics charter.
introduced this june, the ocean plastics charter has been signed by 5 of the 7 nations which make up the g7. the us 🇺🇸 and japan 🇯🇵 have not yet signed on.
curious who else is in the g7? 🌍 glad you asked! the ‘group of seven’ is made up of canada (this year’s g7 president), france, germany, italy, japan, the united kingdom, and the united states. the g7 represents the largest advanced economies. the g7 meets annually to talk about policies that impact the global economy which, of course, includes the ocean 🌊 economy!
ps — thanks minister mckenna for stating from stage the importance of individual and community action and policies to reduce use of single-use plastics, specifically starting with the plastic straw. 🛒 by @louisemccurdy 📸 by @bamford_alex#g7halifax#strawlessocean
The @newyorkermag named dr. sylvia earle "her deepness." a pioneer in underwater exploration and a leading female in #steam, in 1970 sylvia was also the captain of the first all-female team to live underwater. sylvia still works tirelessly on behalf of our ocean and through her organization @mission_blue, where she inspires all of us to care for our ocean and fight for marine protected areas so that they might support the restoration of “the blue heart of the planet.” 📸@theadamdillon for @lonelywhale at #makingwaves
New research shows that baby sea turtles 🐢 are likely dying due to ingested #plasticpollution, which threatens the species’ survival. “sea turtles are known to mistake ocean plastics for prey, like crab or fish eggs…” while many of us might associate #plasticstraws as a major threat to #turtles, a new study from our collaborators at #uganewmaterials is the first study to find #microplastics particles smaller than dust or powdered sugar inside these baby #seaturtles. 🐢100% of the #turtles in this study were found to have eaten plastic 🤯. this is a warning sign ⚠️ and we’re running out of time to #breakfreefromplastic. learn more by clicking the link in our bio. 📸 by the incomparable @benjhicks
