Over the past week i was lucky enough to be working in auckland with new zealand opera on a new work that was co-composed by crowded house and split enz star tim finn and tom mcleod with text by gary henderson. we were under the direction of the enigmatic simon phillips. i had a great week with a fun cast and i was made to feel right at home especially by the lovely carla parry! looking forward to working with you all again sometime soon! photo credit: joanne cole
It has been lovely getting back to the airbnb after rehearsals this week and having a dip! i will miss the beautiful weather! it was a great perth festival showcase yesterday of luke styles’ and a peter goldsworthy’s ned kelly with the team at lost and found opera. and i have had a ball getting to know many fabulous musicians on the west coast! but now the return journey home and onto the next project!
Off again on another adventure. this time a week in perth doing workshops and a showcase for a new work, ‘ned kelly’ with lost and found opera. the showcase will be performed as part of the perth festival next sunday! if you are in town come along and say hello!
Yesterday i had the last stage audition of my sojourn in europe. it really has been an exciting time with so many different connections being established all over germany and in austria. i have also learned so much about the inner workings of opera houses over here and have regularly used the german and italian languages in both working (coachings and lessons) and audition capacities. now onto london for a few days before coming home on jan 16! looking forward to some heat and catching ups with family and friends after almost three months!
Buongiorno da milano! having just had a bit of a break in italy during the christmas period, after a busy german and austrian adventure, i am pleased to announce that i was a finalist and prize winner in the 3rd international ljuba welitsch singing competition. we rehearsed here (pictured) in the vienna musikverein and the rounds were held in the salon rasumovsky. this was my first international comp and i was extremely blown away by the young talent from all over the world. competitors were from germany, austria, russia, poland, armenia, japan, south korea, china, france, the uk and north america. it was great connecting with these singers and hopefully colleagues into the future!
Watching my first opera in italy! la traviata at la fenice in venice with my beautiful wife! this is one of the most beautiful theatres that i have ever been in. and the tenor this evening is outstanding... beautiful italianate singing! i feel at home!
After a busy month it was nice to have some time to reflect on what has recently transpired. having jumped off the plane on monday afternoon from sydney after just completing the third season of oa's two weddings, one bride at the sydney opera house on sunday night, i was literally straight into rehearsals for the herald sun aria. the competition was held on wednesday night at hamer hall and it was another great experience. learning to jump from high energy operetta to grand opera on the concert stage has been an interesting and somewhat stressful journey but a fulfilling one nonetheless! although not placing on wednesday night, it really was quite the event and the singing was of an excellent standard. congrats to max riebl for taking 1st prize, olivia cranwell for being runner up, shanul sharma for being given the encouragement award, and raph wong for performing beautifully! @orchestravictoria played wonderfully under richard mills! here is a photo from the first orchestral rehearsal courtesy of @megansteller ! now back to sydney for the lady fairfax new york scholarship on sunday afternoon!
After fours days of two weddings, one bride performances, back to back, i'm happy to be relaxing and learning some new music by the pool on my day off. not such a bad view from the pool area! only 7 shows remaining in this third season!
The sydney opera house friday night last week. looking as special as ever. tomorrow i begin my stage rehearsals for opera australia's two weddings one bride in this building! my first time! a scary and exciting moment! the third season for two weddings one bride opens on thursday night! come along to say hi!
Here is an action shot from last saturday's herald sun aria semi-final. i am performing tom rakewell's aria 'here i stand' from stravinsky's the rake's progress alongside the lovely caroline almonte. photo credit: tim carrafa
After a highly competitive rmp aria final last night i am pleased to have received second prize. i must congratulate my fellow finalists. everyone did a wonderful job and i'm sure there are futures for them all in this varied industry. special congratulations to oliver boyd who took out the first prize, sam piper who came third and james emerson who, at the young age of 19, received the conductors encouragement award. stefan cassomenos cannot be forgotten, he was spectacular as our associate artist at the piano! and thanks again to andrew wailes who put the event together. here is an action shot from the night!
Looking forward to performing as a finalist in tonight's royal melbourne philharmonic aria!
sound check is complete and feeling ready to roll! it is great for the rmp that it is a completely sold out event. looking forward to hearing the concert choir perform later in the evening.
and as always if you are coming along this evening please come on over and say hi after the concert! hopefully see you later on!

A photo of opera australia's king roger sitzprobe last night at the gorgeous st. kilda town hall. with maestro molino at the helm. orchestra victoria, the cast and the chorus are sounding amazing! looking forward to opening night in a week and a half!
Last night we had the piano tech call for opera australia's production of "two weddings one bride" in the sydney opera house, playhouse theatre. it really is going to be a charming production. it has been a time of many firsts during the rehearsal period and covering two roles in the one show has definitely been a busy yet a fun challenge. today we have two piano dress rehearsals!
