"when i travel, i have a knack for finding steep stairways hidden between houses and rock — and in eastern sicily, those stairways have a tendency to lead to stunning views. in ragusa, a small town near the island’s southeastern corner, i had to race against time to make it up a long series of steps before the sun set over the city. ragusa is an interesting place — it was nearly destroyed by a 1693 earthquake, and in the aftermath, the surviving citizens rebuilt their town in two distinct sections. that centuries-old decision led to a unique local atmosphere, but it also had the unintended consequence of creating unforgettable vistas for future explorers like me. i’m glad that the survivors rebuilt ragusa the way they did, and i’m glad that i bustled up all those stairs to marvel at it."

"it was late november, and moscow had already experienced two consecutive weeks of cold, gray weather. but on this day, nature decided to give us a gift. when i saw the sun climbing over the horizon, i excitedly made my way over to the city center. even though it was early, i noticed other people hurrying through the streets as well, cameras in hand, asking others to take photos of them near the city’s landmarks. as i composed my shot of st. basil’s cathedral, i felt grateful for the beautiful morning — both for myself and for the visitors, too. the sun had given us all a reason to smile."

Bali is the indonesian island best known for its forested volcanic mountains, iconic rice
paddies, sandy beaches, and coral reefs. anyone who’s had the chance to visit this oasis of southeast asia understands that there’s something special embedded in its landscape, people, and culture. it may be difficult to articulate, but it’s impossible to forget.

“i shot this photo while hosting an insta-meet in bath. i wanted to take everyone through the botanical gardens and then down to pulteney bridge to get some shots of the autumnal colors. while in the gardens, we came across these wooden frames that looked like portals into other worlds. they then sparked the question of, 'if you had your own portal, where would you go?' it made me think of two locations i’ve always wanted to visit: banff and yosemite. for the sake of this composite, however, i used an image of a place i’ve been to many times — the aforementioned pulteney bridge. when i posted it later, i decided to pose the same question to all who viewed it: 'where would you go?' it's always fun to see where one's imagination wanders.”

"this image was taken at the tomb of emperor jahangir. it lies in the historic town of lahore and is a masterpiece of mughal architecture. the tomb itself is made up of a combination of red sandstone and white marble and is considered a rare treat for locals and visitors alike, not least for its intricate inlays. while the external expression is restrained in its dignified simplicity, inside, the tomb's decorative surfaces present you with the best tile mosaic and fresco in the whole of the mughal empire. it is an exquisite architectural marvel, and one that is well worth a visit."

"as soon as you arrive in the city, you're surrounded by blue walls, blue doors, and blue houses. strolling through the tiny streets and wandering around, you dive into the cobalt that paints every corner. they say that blue was the color that drove away mosquitos, but even if the myth isn't true, there's something undeniably magical about the light and hues of chefchaouen."
