From founder and president, amy kerwin:
izzle loves carrots (and everything else!): http://primatesinc.com/izzle-loves-carrots/
although i love them all equally, there is something very special about izzle’s gentle and shy demeanor, which is why i chose to donate to izzle’s daily care costs by sponsoring him through our sponsor-a-monkey program.
rhesus macaques are omnivorous primates who especially enjoy their fresh fruits and vegetables. i love to sit with the monkeys during their breakfast and dinners and take in the sounds of them munching, chewing and slurping their food. in the lab, monkeys are rarely afforded the opportunity of a large meals of fresh fruit and vegetables—this is one of the reasons why we decided on creating the “lip-smackin’ good” campaign for our sanctuary.
additionally, lip smacking behavior (opening and closing of lips at a rapid pace) is often a friendly gesture seen between two primates.
Pi’s primatologist- hilary kavanaugh had the exciting opportunity to represent us at the north american primate sanctuary alliance’s conference in sunny gainesville, fl. these conferences are held once a year to gather the top primate sanctuaries in the u.s. to ensure the highest quality of care for captive nonhuman primates. how appropriate that this year’s theme was “mission possible: monkey retirement”! we were honored to receive a special recognition from napsa in celebration of primates inc. retiring our first three monkeys from an out-of-state laboratory. we are looking to the future more than ever and excited to be a part of giving many more primates the retirement they deserve! #primatesincorporated#lipsmackingood#primatesinc#dotheuprightthing#supportprimateretirement visit primatesinc.com/support
Since mother nature provided snow last week, we decided to give the monkeys one last taste of winter - literally! rhesus monkeys don’t tolerate being out in the cold and snow, but they sure enjoyed foraging through the snow for peanuts and flavored snow in the warmth of the indoors! we will have to bring them a whole lot more snow to play with next year.
at primates incorporated, we give the monkeys various daily enrichment to encourage naturalistic behaviors such as foraging. here is a close-up of river finding his goodies!
we could really use your help to support the amazing staff and the electricity that keeps primates incorporated running for these amazing beings. please sponsor a monkey or human at primatesinc.com/support, thank you! #primatesincorporated#lipsmackingood#dotheuprightthing#supportprimateretirement
