"talk of the town", mixed media, 36" × 36" × 2-1/2" resin on panel. on display now at zk gallery (#zkgallery@zk_gallery ) #artgallery#sanfrancsico#sanfranciscoart#contemporaryart#modernart#mixedmedia#newwork#laurenbacall#ww2#oldhollywood#artist#ryanmulford
the foundational image of this piece is derived from a photo of lauren bacall, circa 1944. that same year, lauren bacall rose to fame with the release of her first film, to have and have not. the scandal of the time was her onscreen/off screen romance with humphrey bogart (then a married man, twice her age). this was also the year that world war ii was finally coming to an end (the strips in the piece of the airplane gong down represent the war). together, these events were the literally the talk of the town during that time. it echos the way our society today gives equal coverage to celebrity and tragedy. war and culture are interlaced with one another.
"empire", hybrid media painting, 36"x48" resin on panel #hybridmedia#painting#mixedmedia#newart#newwork#contemporaryart#modernart#vivienleigh#cleopatra#1945#ryanmulford
for this ongoing work/series, i’ve developed a new technique that i call hybrid media painting - a fusion of digital and painterly methods, the goal being to arrive at something you could not achieve without blending old technology with new. the series explores the concept that the past is slowly fading away, and regardless of celebrity or modern technology, eventually everyone and everything will be forgotten.
the original image used for this piece is derived from a little known film from 1945, caesar and cleopatra, staring vivien leigh as cleopatra. at the start of filming, vivien discovered she was pregnant. during a scene where cleopatra runs up and down the memphis palace, she slipped on the freshly polished studio floor, causing her to miscarry. devastated, she did not attend the premier of the film, and later said she could not bring herself to watch it. in this captivating image, you can see the traces of tragedy and sacrifice through her will to continue with her role.
