nets k**l marine life indiscriminately, meaning everything is taken. this leaves a lot of species killed as bycatch (the non targeted species). sharks, marine mammals, turtles and birds are killed with these nets. if you want to do something for the oceans, you can eat less seafood, but also make sustainable choices when you do. there are safe seafood guides/apps (seafood watch from monterey bay aquarium) you can download. you can also ask questions. seafood is often mislabeled, so don't be afraid to ask what it is, where it is from and how it is caught! another great question to ask is if there is bycatch? the fish itself might be sustainable, but the bycatch might not be. it is our responsibility to be educated and informed consumers, so always ask and do you research. simple choices can make a difference.
