A #flashbackfriday look at samantha leyva, miss mexico guerrero 2016. the afro-mexican beauty later went on to place 1st runner up in the miss world mexico 2016 pageant. samantha was crowned πŸ‘‘ miss supranational mexico 2017, & was a top 25 semi-finalist at the miss supranational 2017 pageant. @samanthaaleyva
_____________
trivia: a native of the tourist city of acapulco, samantha is a nurse who works to improve health care access πŸ’‰πŸ’Š in afro-mexican communities. there are 1.4 million self-identified afro-mexicans (1.3% of the total population) – mainly concentrated in mexico's costa chica region, particularly the coastal states of guerrero and oaxaca – who gained official recognition from the mexican government in 2015. for the first time ever (& only after a 20-year struggle by afro-mexican activists), government officials allowed afros the option to self-identify as such. the 2015 national survey served as a preliminary count before the 2020 national census, where "negro" (black) will debut as a racial category.

Afrolatinidad is real ! // via @boriquachicks - πŸ—£ via @makeup_and_afros - stay strong, @amaralanegraaln proud afro-dominicana.
as #afrolatinas, we constantly face erasure and blatant ignorance, antiblackness, discrimination, racism, sexism, etc. this was one of many daily examples of ignorant folks believing that #latinidad and #blackness are mutually exclusive and that blackness only exists in the usa, as "african americanness" or in africa.
it still perplexes me how people don't know about the extent of #transatlanticslavery and how afro latinos are truly the first major black presence in the "americas." πŸ’₯

Last month, univision released a segment on afro latinos in regards to our stories & struggles to fight for our equality, rights, & visibility in latin america. in this short clip it mentions how many blacks aren’t aware of their potential, their rights, and their value. many countries in latin america purposely adjust or leave off their black population on their censuses in order to “hide” their black population by ignoring their existence. in 2015, mexico finally allowed their black citizens to be on their census and around 1.3million afro mexicans claimed their identity. we have a lot of work to do, but this is a start thank you @edwinpittitv for taking the time to bring this to univision in d.c. lets continue to get this visibility all over. ✊🏿 link in bio! #africandiaspora #afrolatino #afrolatinos #cuba #colombia #panama #dominican #mexico #mexican #afromexican #puertorican #puertorico #n***o #afrolatina #afrolatinas

Have y’all ever got non-black latinxs following you on social media, and at first they seem “cool” about following a black latinx page, up until we post about some of them claiming afro-latinidad when it benefits them? then they’re all like “but we’re all mixed”...not understanding that they just proved your point, by saying that? you might have 10%, or 15% african blood in you, but that doesn’t make you black.

that really irks me. it’s like they know they’re not black, which is one of the main reasons why they follow my page, because they like the information about afro-latinxs...but then completely undermine our struggles whenever we talk about racism in latinx countries? then all of a sudden they think they know more about us than we do? saying it’s all in our heads and that we’re all “mixed”. those type of people get blocked on my page. •
mini rant over. ❀️

edit: anyways i’m just waiting for a non-black latinx to come on to this post an say “we’re all mixed”, it’s like i expect it at this point 😭😭😭

disclaimer: if you are half afro-latinx/black then you are black. this post is for non-black latinxs, not bi-racial black people with 1 black parent! •

Before baby formula, the options for new mothers to feed their babies was limited. b****t milk played a vital role in raising infants, but white women perceived breastfeeding as demeaning.
by the 17th century wet nurses were popular in europe and the practice made its way to the united states.
during the time of slavery, enslaved wet nurses were valuable commodities in the south.

shortly after giving birth, enslaved mothers would be forced to breastfeed s***e mistresses’ babies instead of their own.

enslaved mothers could only see their own babies every few weeks, and could not properly breastfeed them - resulting in the astoundingly high death rate of black infants.

for the health of our children, we must know this history so we can understand our cultural attitude towards breastfeeding and break this barrier!

love the black woman😍

Regrann from @blackfacts online - regrann from @royale417 - the more you know:

africans in mexico and afro-mexicans were no strangers to revolution.  an independent colony of former slaves was established at san lorenzo de los negros (known today as yanga) following a rebellion in 1537 in veracruz.  they were led by a gabon native named gaspar yanga (nyanga) and successfully staved off spanish attempts to re-enslave the population for some forty years.  the autonomy of the enclave was ultimately recognized in 1608, making san lorenzo de los negros (yanga) the first community of free blacks in the americas.
