Leptis magna⠀
a principal city of roman north africa, the largest city of the ancient tripolis. the original settlement was by the phoenicians during the 6th century bc, then carthaginian and numidian, later becoming romanized under emperor augustus and colonized by emperor trajan; it was the birthplace of septimius severus. among the ruins are a theater, forum, basilica curia, circus, gate, arches, amphitheater, and the hunting baths – particularly well-preserved after its 7th-century (following arab conquest) decline by desert sand. the earliest remains are from the augustan age, and the site is important as evidence for the early development of roman north african provincial architecture.⠀

🇹🇷 leptis magna⠀

Imagine this - part 8.

the year is 332 bc. after making your way through the ancient corridors of the forgotten tomb, you finally reach the sarcophagus.

the room is covered with gilded gold that reflects light off of every surface. the long forgotten pharaoh lies within reach. your long journey has finally ended.

as you edge closer the room grows darker. whispers ripple through the air. you grip onto the heavy lid covering the king and push with all your might. the cover tips over and slides to the floor. dust is thrown up and hampers your ability to see. you rub your eyes and cough to clear your lungs.

the dust settles and you finally see him.

he looks just like you.

One of the most ridiculously pretty sites i have ever seen: ala tei. a few hours by car from @tunnug1 it is situated near a reservoir and periodically submerged. the unlooted burials from the xiongnu period are hidden in a sandbox dreamland of archaeologists. m. kilunovskaya and @pavel_fahrner always welcome our team for games and drinks ☺️

A thousand years ago, a group of devout christians from the greek island of samos built a church and small monastery in an impossibly remote location, high above the small settlement of kambos, on mt. kerkis. the nuns who lived in what evolved into a convent moved away in 2007 due to the impossibility of living in such a remote locale in failing health, and today the site, which sits near the end of a glorious hike on an idyllic island, is closed to the public.⁣
⁣
a quick look at a map of samos reveals a lot about the history of the island and the devotion of its early inhabitants. there are dozens of little black dots with crosses, signifying the presence of a church or monastery, all over the map, but mostly in the mountainous interior. here and indeed all over the balkans, christians built churches in remote locations because they feared pirates, turks, and other invaders.⁣

these places of worship can be difficult to find, but many in samos and across what was once ancient macedonia, are adorned with stunning frescoes and make for remarkably good hikes.

Pottery is the great survivor of history. pottery vessels have rarely ever attracted tomb robbers and the material can not be reused like bronze or gold. even if smashed to pieces, pots can be painstakingly put back together again and clay is impervious to damp, mould, insects or even time itself. and pottery is plentiful - rubbish dumps, wells, and tombs the world over are rich sources of this everyday material.

pottery can be used to date archaeological sites, reveals long-forgotten trade links, the decoration can show artistic evolution within cultures and it often reveals details of everyday life from clothing to religious rituals, from eating habits to now-lost versions of otherwise well-known myths. finally, the finer pieces of pottery are artworks in themselves, revealing sophisticated firing techniques and exquisite painting skills.

in this collection, we look at the pottery of some of the most famous producers of wares in history such as the striking black figures on ancient greek pottery, the three-dimensional models in clay beloved by the etruscans and, perhaps the two finest examples of the ceramic arts ever produced, celadon pottery from korea and ming dynasty porcelain.
