How to get the most out of therapy:

➰talk to your therapist about your goals. it’s helpful to have an idea of what you’d like to work on in therapy.

➰be open and honest. if you aren’t honest, it limits or undermines the therapy process.

➰do your homework. it’s helpful to be working toward therapy goals in between sessions. this could involve reading, journaling, or practice skills.
.
➰follow-up frequently while actively working toward your goals. when you’re working on goals, it helps to attend therapy weekly or every few weeks. this keeps things consistent and gives you the support you need while making changes.

➰discuss with your therapist any issues that may arise. if you’re not making progress, if you’re not discussing the things that are important to you, if your therapist says something that you don’t like, talk to them about it.

➰prioritize appointments. i know it’s difficult to get to therapy, especially during work hours. some folx rush into sessions at the last minute or arrive late and then sessions are cut short just to fit it in. if you can, try to give yourself some space before and after appointments to prepare and process.

➰have an agenda for sessions. your sessions are yours, so it helps to have an idea of what you’d like to work on or what topic you’d like to discuss.
