Walton passacaglia is finally here! a crazy modern/neoromantic/avant-garde version on a theme and variations. it’s been a long time since i devoted myself to solo cello modern classical music. every piece is so different nowadays. the possibilities for music seems endless!
here’s walton after an hour of practicing ☺️

one of my very favorites from the wide world of #postpunk and art-rock, and one of the first i got into. immediately takes me back to 2005 when i discovered experimental music and was getting blown away by previously unknown realms of aesthetics and creativity. a big part of the appeal of this record is the underrated guitar work of short-lived member #martinbramah, who uses his spindly tone to create both melodic accompaniment and dissonant tension, sometimes switching between the two at the drop of a hat (see "rebellious jukebox"). add in yvonne pawlett's chintzy keyboards, mark e. smith's famously detached post-beat poetics, and a dense crop of amazing modernist #rocknroll, and you've got an essential. it's that combination of intellectualism and true excitement that makes this music click - it all comes home in the paradoxic moment on the title track when smith declares, over an abstract soundscape, "i still believe in the r&r dream / r&r as primal scream." (how 'bout that - you can be futurist without repudiating the past!) speaking of smith moments, the one when he drops his sardonic "ah-ah-ah-ah-ah"s into "no xmas for john quays" has to be one of my favorites in all of recorded music.
