Round 2 of qualifying for #bermuda3s will be held at @portroyalgolf. robert trent jones designed this beauty next to the old whale bay battery, a fort and channel used by the royal navy. good choice as it’s aesthetically pleasing as ever.
In 2015, blues rock heroes #alabamashakes returned triumphantly with a powerhouse sophomore record that leapt miles ahead of their already stellar 2012 debut.
sound & color has the band unshackling themselves from the roots rock revivalism that characterized their initial fame, in favor of a sleeker, more progressive and eclectic sound.
the opening title track makes this perfectly clear - a soft, spacey meditation led by mallets and rim shots that escalate beautifully into symphonic gospel & soul. other songs breaking their original mold flirt with psychedelia, tightly-wound funk, surf punk, vintage indie aesthetics, and hard rock riffs heavy enough to shake the earth beneath you.
the blues are still in effect, but with a sleek affinity for electronic elements, and a w i c k e d feel for dynamics; this time around, the shakes are overwhelming you with complexly woven chaos before snapping you back into tight focus.
gimme all your love is a perfect ex/ of this. tip-toeing through soulful verses that explode into dramatic, ear-melting rock bravado. if you're going to listen to any track on s&c, try this first.
i would be totally remiss to not mention #brittanyhoward. her guitar work is southern and inventive; quirky and twangy as it is catchy and precise. her dynamic vocals command what i think is one of the most powerful stage presences the 2010’s ever saw; soft and soulful one verse, and enormous and primal the next. she is the mitochondria of this powerhouse.
through all of its prog and experimental new aspects, this record is still very accessible. however, if they are mainstream now, it's because the shakes demanded a place on the radio by blowing the doors off the soft indie vehicle we now consider mainstream rock music.
this album still melts my ears almost 4 years on, and i can't wait for their next effort. in the meantime, you can hear howard’s voice and guitar contributing to a new folk trio #bermudatriangle, founded last year; as well as the straightforward rock & roll outfit #thunderbitch she began the same year sound & color was released.
