Continuing with analyzing all 9 best picture nominees, we come to greta gerwig’s lady bird, which i think is in fifth place. though the movie has received a lot of nominations from the industry, it has gone home mostly empty handed but for a gimme, the globes comedy. nominations at sag/pga/dga/wga have all netted nothing. even moonlight had the writers with it.
and although many like the movie, i doubt it has the broad academy appeal it needs to win. some people don’t get the hype and others dismiss lady bird as a brat. and it doesn’t “feel” like an oscar movie.
now, will people want to lean into it, given #metoo, etc? certainly possible. on the other hand, with just five nominations, it has a really chance of going home empty-handed, likely the only second bp nominee to do so.
it has picture, director, actress, supporting actress, and screenplay. the first three seem dead. metcalf could definitely stun janney but she has not done so yet. and the screenplay race seems to be tilting towards get out after the wga win and the bafta win for 3bb.
i think the historic nominations are the end of the road for this nominee, which is unlikely to win best picture.
convince me i’m wrong and argue why lady bird can or will win! #oscars#academyawards#film#movie#ladybird#lauriemetcalf#saoirseronan#gretagerwig#bestpicture#bestdirector#bestactress#bestsupportingactress#bestscreenplay
