The threatened, choco-endemic dark-backed wood-quail occurs in a tiny (about 6000 square km) section of nw ecuador and sw colombia. groups forage for invertebrates and fruits in undisturbed cloud forest where their population density in good habitat is roughly 2-3 groups per 250 acres. but the amount of good forest continues to shrink and with it the dark-backed wood-quail’s population. fortunately some great grass-roots projects, like the famous refugio paz de las aves, protect birds while showing local communities the eco-tourism potential of preserving forest.
