linkapaulinka Went to a couple of fabric stores today here in south africa and got lots of colorful shweshwe scraps for pillows, quilts, nicknack bags, and yes, at least one bigger piece for a skirt or a dress. in and of itself, shweshwe (alt. sp. shoeshoe or isishweshwe) is an interesting concept and appeals to me for several reasons. it's colorful (though it hasn't always been so) and it features intricate geometric patterns. shweshwe’s complicated history* reflects a story of trade and cultural interchanges across continents, of social and economic destruction, of indigenization, and of cultural revitalization. during the 1970s and 1980s, many white south african women wore shweshwe to signal solidarity with anti-apartheid struggle. the s***e lodge (a museum dedicated to moving from human wrongs to human rights) has an excellent exhibit on the history of shweshwe. so if i sound dorky and nerdy, blame the exhibit (and wikipedia), not me. last but not least, the three cats is the predominant brand/trade mark of shweshwe these days, which - i assure you - bears no relevance whatsoever to my liking of shweshwe. my new singer sewing machine will be busy once i make it back home to dc. ------------------------------------------------ *known as the denim of south africa, its origins are in european indigo printed cloth. originally produced in eastern europe, mainly czechoslovakia and hungary (in the indigo variation only), it came to south africa with german, swiss, and french settlers. its peculiar name comes from lesotho's king moshoeshoe (alt. sp. moshweshwe), who popularized the use of the fabric among the xhosa and the sesotho people, having been gifted with the fabric by french missionaries in the 1840s. interestingly, it’s xhosa name - ujamani (or amajamani, jelmani, jereman) - is a variation of the xhosa word for “german.” ------------------------------------------------ #shweshwe#shweshwefabric#shoeshoe#isishweshwe#indigo #sejeremane in #sesotho #ujamani in #xhosa #madeinsouthafrica#indigenization #thethreecats#catladymoment #dagamatextiles#textiles#indigo#printedcloth#blueprint#blaudruck #capetown#kaapstad#sa#southafrica#westerncape#traveldeeper #sewing#singermachine
