I was going to post generally about about one of istanbul's loveliest institutions, the relationship between its thousands of neither domestic nor ferile cats, and the respectful and respectful in equal measures istanbullus. however, in searching for the right words to pen, and sifting through my heaps of photos, i found gli. gli is pictured in the first frame, although i didn't realise it was any cat of note at first. gli has lived under the dome of majestic hagia sophia for over ten years, and is tended to by the museum curators. slightly cross-eyed, gli has outlived a brother, pati, and a sister, kizim (daughter in turkish), and has become quite the celebrity. not only can gli boast about being petted by president erdogan, he has also been stroked by barack obama. i saw gli while wandering awestruck beneath the cupolas of hagia sophia. he only waited a brief moment, oblivious to me and my camera, before trotting off, content with his happy life, to the recesses of the museum: the reserve only of curators and celebrity cats. his story warmed my heart so much, it would have been remiss for me not to try to do him some justice, gli, istanbul's feline celebrity.
