#reposting@barriodandy with @instarepost_app -- june 3rd 1943 los angeles, 75 years ago today, the day that changed the city of los ángeles and the angelino.
-the zoot suit riots were a series of racial attacks against mexican americans and those that wore the zootsuit pachuco style in 1943 during world war ii that broke out in los angeles, california, during a period when racial tensions were high and the mexican american community was marginalized and stereotyped as "savages" on june 3rd 1943 assigned servicemen flooded the city and altercation began in downtown l.a. as service men pulled mexican american youth out of the regent theater on main street and beat and striped them of their clothing and their dignity.
the attacks continued on for 3 days following with hundreds of attacks against mexican americans and mass hysteria, falsly branding the mexican americans as culprits in inciting of the riots, the lapd started large sweeps of young mexican american men and women and falsly aresting over 500 individuals for wearing the #zootsuit style. -"if you looked like a pachuco o pachuca you were the enemy...if you were mexican you were the enemy."
the zootsuit attacks mark the beginning and that set the president for what would become years later the chicano civil rights movement. it was a deep reality of hatred, inequality, marginalization and bigotry against the mexican & mexican american communities in los angeles. #styleasresistance #breakthechains#losangeles #zootsuitriots #zootsuit #pachuco #pachucos #pachucas #1943#1940s#losangelesstyle #chicano #chicana #xicano #xicana #swing #equality
