finally saw some combat today! we were moving out west when some iraqi armor was moving to or position from the south. they took a few shots and staff sergeant mottz ordered seltzman and i to move into some small dunes to establish some small arms fire and help aid the a-10s sight the iraqis in. when we were moving the iraqis lit us up. we were talking small arms fire from the same direction as the armor. my guess as to the small arms fire we took, possibly ak47s and rpks.
when we were fighting, i felt this feeling that i cannot describe. the fight just felt so primal. we were doing something that mankind had been doing since it’s conception. fighting.
then, it finally clicked for me. i was fighting in a war. i was shooting and being shot at. holy shit. it. was. awesome. i felt like i was a badass.
seltzman says that he wasn’t scared at all. neither was i. i’ll admit that i was nervous before and after the fight, but during it, it was f*****g awesome.
when the a-10s swooped by to take care of the armor, i couldn’t help but stare in amazement. i have never seen such power come from a gun before in my life. i have never heard a gun that fast either. i can only describe it as a “brrrrrt” noise.
after the fight, we checked what was left of the iraqi force. when i got there, i saw charred corpses, bloody corpses, and chunks of bodies. it wasn’t pretty. i did manage to find an a-10 bullet though. i was told not to touch it because it’s made of uranium and might give me cancer.
overall though, eventful day.
