The gharial is one of the most critically endangered crocodilian species in the world. historically the gharial's range spanned rivers of bangladesh, bhutan, india, myanmar, nepal and pakistan. today, only small, isolated populations remain in nepal and northern india. when the species came dangerously close to extinction in the 1970s, the government of india gave the gharial full legal protection and many conservation groups began breeding and reintroduction programs, but despite these efforts the species’ struggle to rebound is still ongoing. as human populations have expanded, habitat loss and alteration, unsustainable fishing practices, and illegal hunting for gharial eggs and body parts have continued to put pressure on an already fragile population. to combat this, conservation efforts have shifted towards the preservation of habitat and education of local people. you can help protect species like the gharial by practicing ecotourism when you travel. visit or volunteer with organizations that protect wildlife, and try to avoid buying products made from animals to ensure you are not supporting poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. photo taken at the gharial and turtle rehabilitation center in lucknow, india. #gharial #crocodilian #endangeredspecies #india #nepal #ecotourism #travelsmart #croctober #photoark #savetogether

Never underestimate the power of a crocodile's tail. able to t****t themselves completely out of the water, ambushes can be just as powerful as they are swift.

who ever said crocodiles couldn’t have fun!? in fact, it seems as though they even have their very own water parks filled with slides and rides of all kinds.

Fortunately for this friendly turtle, gharials are fish eating crocodilians and apparently, a mode of underwater transportation. how adorable is this?

While their legs may be quite stubby, crocodiles can still fully leap out of the water. instead, they use their muscular tail to propel themselves in any direction. such unique attributes have allowed these creatures to survive and thrive throughout hundreds of millions of years.
