One of my most favourite nebulas is this stunningly beauty known as the helix nebula, also known as the helix, or ngc 7293, it is a large planetary nebula (pn) located in the constellation aquarius. discovered by karl ludwig harding, probably before 1824, this object is one of the closest to the earth of all the bright planetary nebulae. the estimated distance is about 215 parsecs (700 light-years). it is similar in appearance to the cat's eye nebula and the ring nebula, whose size, age, and physical characteristics are similar to the dumbbell nebula, varying only in its relative proximity and the appearance from the equatorial viewing angle. the helix nebula has sometimes been referred to as the "eye of god" in pop culture,as well as the "eye of sauron, so amazing πŸ’« #solareclipse #solarsystem #space #nasa #space #deepspace #interstellar #spacetravel #earth #science #cosmos #nebula #explore #planets #universe #lightspeed #space

This photo took one year to process and over 200 hours of camera time to get the right exposure needed to reveal the complexity of stars and nebula formations. this is the orion nebula; living in the orion constellation. you might think of orion as just three stars but there’s way more than that; as seen in this rare picture. that giant yellow star is called betelgeuse and it’s the 9th brightest star in the sky 640 light years away. one day it will explode into a giant supernova; sometime in the next 100,000 years.

Most galaxies don't have any rings -- why does this galaxy have two? to begin, the bright band near ngc 1512's center is a nuclear ring, a ring that surrounds the galaxy center and glows brightly with recently formed stars. most stars and accompanying gas and dust, however, orbit the galactic center in a ring much further out -- here seen near the image edge. this ring is called, counter-intuitively, the inner ring. if you look closely, you will see this the inner ring connects ends of a diffuse central bar that runs horizontally across the galaxy. these ring structures are thought to be caused by ngc 1512's own asymmetries in a drawn-out process called secular evolution. the gravity of these galaxy asymmetries, including the bar of stars, cause gas and dust to fall from the inner ring to the nuclear ring, enhancing this ring's rate of star formation. some spiral galaxies also have a third ring -- an outer ring that circles the galaxy even further out.

M33 the triangulum galaxy.

distance: 3 million light years

the milky way, the andromeda galaxy and the triangulum galaxy are members of the local group, a collection of about 50 galaxies in our neighborhood of space.

it was really fun to do this one, i could hardly see anything on the 60 sec. subs. there is much more exposure time needed to view the spiral arms but i think this is ok for the first try.

When did orion become so flashy? this colorful rendition of part of the constellation of orion comes from red light emitted by hydrogen and sulfur (sii), and blue-green light emitted by oxygen (oiii). hues on the featured image were then digitally reassigned to be indicative of their elemental origins -- but also striking to the human eye. the breathtaking composite was painstakingly composed from hundreds of images which took nearly 200 hours to collect. pictured, barnard's loop, across the image bottom, appears to cradle interstellar constructs including the intricate orion nebula seen just right of center. the flame nebula can also be quickly located, but it takes a careful eye to identify the slight indentation of the dark horsehead nebula. as to orion's flashiness -- a leading explanation for the origin of barnard's loop is a supernova blast that occurred about two million years ago.

Flaming star and tadpoles nebula in hst palette processing. i completed all three channels this weekend for ha sii and oiii. bright moon and severe turbulence did not make is easier especially for oiii. here is a quick edit to show all the data. i used all good and bad subs. the reason why i prefer false color is to show greater detail on the emission lines. i shot sii again last night and will reprocess this and filter all the bad subs out.
