Repost from @patricialaydorsey - i've been going to detroit's african world festival for years and have always loved it. but this year was special. the families! oh my goodness, such wonderful families to photograph for my "families in detroit" photo project! i will be sharing some of these photos over the next few days, but first i want to show the daddies and their little ones. i was so touched by the love that passed between them. i expect you will be too. #africanworldfestivaldetroit #detroit #familiesindetroit #families #charleshwrightmusemofafricanamericanhistory #daddiesandtheirchildren #fatherlove #blackfathers . . . #blackfather #blackfathers #blackdad #blackfamilylove #blackfamilies #blackfamily #blackdads #blackman #blackmen #blackdaughters #blackchildren #blacklegacy #blackcommunity #blackwoman #blackwomen #blackmothers

This was day 2 of our documenting detroit fellowship 2017 intensive in downtown detroit. since there were six of us mentors working with the photography fellows today, i was able to duck out for an hour and scoot down to the river where i found families to photograph for the new project i started last sunday. i am learning as much, if not more, than the young people i am mentoring. whatever i say to them, i must put into practice myself. @everydaymotorcity #detroit #documentingdetroitfellowship2017 #familiesindetroit

Day 3 of our documenting detroit fellowship 2017 intensive in downtown detroit proved to be another beautiful summer day. although the intensive officially began at 10 am today, the fellows were slow in arriving. for me as a mentor, that freed me up to go off on another of my "families in detroit" photo shoots. it's hard to put into words how much i adore working on this project! just connecting with each of these wonderful families with their unique stories is an incredible gift. today it was the women and girls who touched me most deeply. the grandmother with her granddaughter and great granddaughters whom i photographed as they sat on a shady bench on the riverwalk, the two families of muslim women who were also sitting beside the riverwalk, and the little girl with her mother and younger brother who were playing with the water as it sprayed them from underground sprinklers on the pavement. i feel like the luckiest person on the planet to have found a project about which i am so passionate. #detroitfamiliesproject #passionateaboutphotography #detroit @everydaymotorcity #familiesindetroit

Detroit was really hopping over the weekend! there continued to be 50 international, national and local artists painting murals in and around the eastern market as part of the @1xrun @muralsinthemarket 8-day street art festival. i was there as much as possible taking photos of these amazing murals. on friday and saturday nights we also had the spectacular dlectricity light festival in the cultural center around the museums, galleries and detroit public library in midtown. of course, i had to be there too! on friday night i felt privileged to watch the 34 photo projects of the 2016 & 2017 documenting detroit fellows being projected on the 4-story outside wall of the charles h. wright museum of african american history. on saturday night i took to the streets with my camera and had an absolute blast taking photographs for my own photo project, "families in detroit." dlectricity went from 7 pm to midnight and as it got darker, it became more and more of a challenge for me to get enough light to take my pictures. i did not want to use my flash because i find it quite intrusive, especially with children whose eyes are very sensitive. even so, i did manage to take lots of pictures out on the streets that night, including this family i found with a group of bike riders parked outside church's chicken on woodward. i'm sure they had participated in the 4-mile dlectricity light bike parade! #familiesindetroit #families #detroit #dlectricity #lightbikeparade

Here is another of the "families in detroit" that i met and photographed on saturday at the 40th annual dally in the alley @dallyinthealleydetroit. not everyone is comfortable having their picture taken. for instance, when i asked to take their picture, this mom said her daughter was quite shy. but we went ahead anyway. i soon saw what she meant because the little one kept holding the sunflower in front of her face every time i snapped the shutter release button. i should have let it go at that, but i regret to say i did ask the little girl to please hold the flower down a bit. she did so and the picture i got showed her frowning. hopefully i learned my lesson. no child should be forced to perform for the camera. #familiesindetroit #dallyinthealley #streetfestival #detroit
