17 aug 2018. dark skies, bright farmhouse
just as the richter scale is used to measure the intensity of the earth’s seismic activity, and the beaufort scale indicates the range of wind speeds experienced at a location, astronomers use the bortle scale to measure the night sky’s brightness at a site. using the numerals from 1 to 9, bortle numbers, or “classes”, can tell you what to expect at a given place by way of the number of stars visible vs light pollution. a class 1 site is the best you can get, with lots of stars, essentially zero light pollution and several deep-sky objects visible to the n***d eye. skies with class 9 ratings are what people living in major cities experience every night.
the site where i photographed this scene is rated a class 3 site, which is very good, considering it is only 15km from the town of nowra (approx 45,000 people) and 130 km from australia’s biggest city, sydney (over 5 million people). somehow i don’t think the land immediately around the farmhouse that’s the source of the bright light on the right-hand side of the photo would get a class 3 rating. i waited in vain for the occupants to turn off their bright outside security light but ended up shooting the images anyhow and using the farmhouse light as a point of interest in the photo. 📷
i shot two overlapping photos, which were then stitched in the application autopano pro, to create the single image featured in today’s post. each of those two shots was photographed with a canon eos 6d mk ii camera, using samyang 14mm xp f/2.4 lens @ f/2.8, exposed for 25 seconds @ iso 6400.

Spending my last 72 hours switching between trains 🚆, planes ✈️ and buses 🚍 i'm happy being back home after 347 days on the road 🗺️ i'm just totally grateful for how my year abroad worked out, having a great time together with my friends. always remembering how many special and extraordinary moments we experienced together while roaming a foreign country! how many places i was able to visit, learning about culture, land and people of new zealand 🇳🇿 so what's gonna last? a whole load of cheerful memories (and a full hard drive^^). never spend so much time outdoors in my life before, so waikatos bridal veil falls are my pick today 🌳✌🏼#foreternity
The taurus molecular cloud (tmc-1) lies 450 ly away in taurus and contains many complex molecules. the upper-right part of the dusty filament shown here is barnard 211, while the lower-left part is barnard 213.
The lagoon nebula is about 4000 light years away and around 100 light years across! it is found in the sagittarius constellation within the milky way. in dark enough skies on a clear night and right time of year, it is visible with the n***d eye (note that our have very poor low light sensitivity, so it’ll appear as a faint gray patch). i reworked my image from earlier this year to bring out more of the pinks like it should be rather than the reds. for those interested, technical details and hashtags are below.
hope you found this interesting!
