rachel.land.yoga Skiers, hikers, cyclists, yogis... we frequently strengthen the quadriceps and rarely stretch them. i’ve found the quads very receptive to mfr, especially to release adhesion between the outer quad (vastus lateralis) and the it band. set up with left knee forward, as you would for pigeon except that the left foot points directly back toward the left hip (rather than pointing diagonally to the right hip). set two tennis or massage balls side by side under your right thigh just above your knee, then find a comfortable position leaning forward onto a prop or your elbows. either rest still, or roll slightly side to side (cross fibering) or bend and straighten your right knee, feeling the muscle fibres contract and relax against the resistance of the ball (this is called a “pin & stretch”). after a few breaths, move the balls a little higher, repeating until you are a little above halfway between your knee and your hip. then reposition the balls just above your right knee but this time set them on the outer corner of the thigh (halfway between the front and side seams of your thigh). roll towards your right side to bring more weight onto the massage balls, and again either remain still, roll side to side, or bend and straighten the right leg. after a few breaths, inch the balls up the corner of your thigh until a little above halfway. when you’re done, remove the balls completely, roll on to your back, and notice what you feel in the right leg, compared to the left. when you’re ready, repeat on the left side.
