i had to think about sampling this week. should my music always be created from scratch, should all sounds start with a simple waveform from a synthesizer and then be turned into whatever my imagination is capable of shaping them into? or use some drum samples at most? this week i went the other direction and set myself the challenge to create a track from only existing loops. so i went ahead and bought a sample/loop pack and put together the loops to create étude no. 14, which felt a little bit like playing with lego bricks. it’s a lot of fun and it’s very efficient - within one afternoon session this piece was done. even though the selection of the loops, the way they are put together and the way they are processed with effects afterwards depends all on personal taste, it feels to me that using only ready-made loops is a bit unoriginal. some of the loops sound nice and fit well to the track, but they don’t necessarily represent my idea of how a melody should sound or how the beat should groove. since i came to that point, i added a bassline and a synth melody, which are not coming from that sample pack, but from a synthesizer instead. overall it was a very fun experiment and would consider making use of more loops to enhance my workflow.
the artwork is made from shutters with worn-down paint, as a search for textures. as always it is crafted by my dear friends @ansadesign & @sanepixels.
