short review: one of the best releases of 2016. no wonder it received widespread critical acclaim. this record is paak’s second studio album and it’s the perfect mix between hip-hop, neosoul and funk under the r&b umbrella. it’s an album to play all the way through, that shows how incredibly talented this 32 year old musician is - not only is he a singer, but also a rapper, drummer, songwriter and record producer. as michael madden of consequence of sound wrote, this record is a “radiant blend of styles dense with instrumentation: a blast of horns here, a piano solo or squiggly guitar lick there, with liquid bass lines and hard-smacking drums throughout”. “am i wrong” is the energetic highlight of the record – a feel good track with some old-school vibes and funky-disco grooves that make us get on the dancefloor (please, those horns at 2:57! they reminded me of “wanna be startin somethin” by mj). but despite its festive tone, its lyrics are very down to earth and express his philosophy of life as an adult. one that he learnt to acquire after some hard times he had to go through as a kid/teen. he believes opportunities are seized, not given, and it’s all about carpe diem – being appreciative of the time you have, and knowing that your time is very valuable and you should choose wisely who you give it to. anderson paak has come to “shake” the genre and i’m positive he won’t be going anywhere – he’s here to stay.
