Reality? reality! simon brejcha x martin velisek. "the exhibition includes also a number of your statues. would you like to comment on those somehow?
i was simply very young; i had more muscles and energy so i embarked on a big and bulky project (laughs)… in fact, these statues are the logical development of my series of paintings inspired by tunnels gnawed by insects in wooden flesh. the statues are a three-dimensional variation on that theme. should you trace a shadow of a statue from a certain angle you would get an exact enlarged outline of what i found in the wood. of course, i had to think in a different way than i’m used to. on the one hand i still felt a need to observe the “assignment”, that is the shape discovered, on the other hand i had to think in three dimensions like a sculptor and counter the flatness of the model. i had to determine a method of adaptation. i first tried to use clay models, then cut out more variants using blocks of plaster, and, ultimately, decided to start my chainsaw… however, the milky matt, non-homogenously coloured, filled and hand sanded epoxy resin surface of the statues is just as important to me. a finish like this allows light rays to spread throughout the entire statue. for this exhibition me and my assistant gave each piece a new sanding and upgraded its surface. in the right space and with good light, i like them even after all those years..." #cermak_eisenkraft#cermakeisenkraft#simonbrejcha#screenprint#graphics#art#fineart#artnews#prague#exhibition#czechrepublic#contemporaryart
