Hey, everyone! 👋🏼
i'm on my way back home now from berlin after bumming around greece for two and a half weeks and am reminiscing a bit about the experience. i'm totally satisfied with my trip. even though i had been curious about greece for a long time i always put off going there in favor of other old and new destinations, but now i know i'll definitely go back some day. first and foremost i went to get some sun, and i definitely got my money's worth. there's also a great music scene in the country that i wanted to discover but couldn't because there are no shows at the moment (though otherwise life seems to be back to normal there) but hopefully next time around it'll be different. at least i got to check out some great record stores! i liked the attitude of the people in greece because it reminded me of latin america and i kind of felt at home. people kept mistaking me for greek and i kinda dug the feeling of not standing out and blending in (unlike in germany).
the trip took me to athens, ioannina, thessaloniki, larissa and then back to athens on the mainland and from there to the cyclades: paros, naxos and syros. i could have probably visited a few more islands but instead chose to spend at least three days on each to get a better feel for the place. the islands were not that full so i got to experience them without crowds (especially paros and naxos), which will probably not be the case next year. it was a great two and a weeks living off the same backpack i've had since my first solo trip abroad when i was 19.
backpacking greece, country number 32, is in the books ✅

the city was a colony of the minoans, who came from cretan miletus around 1900 bc.
miletus was first attested as millawanda, a city of the hittite empire. it took part in a revolt against king muršili, which caused it to be burned in 1320 bc. by the time of the trojan war, the carians ruled it and the city was an ally of troy as well. the sea people burned it later. when doric peoples settled the region, the athenian king neleus settled miletus with his people, which would provide a foundation for future alliances with athens. in the lelantine war of 710-650 bc, it supported eretria instead of chalcis. miletus would establish colonial ties with megara. the milesians also had their own oracle in didyma.the father of philosphy, thales founded the milesian school of naturalism. its tyrant thrasybulus defended the city from a lydian conquest, until miletus fell to the persians under cyrus in 546 bc. the city was a key participant of the ionian revolt, bc its tyrant aristagoras was the leader. when the revolt failed in 493 bc, all men were murdered and the women were sold into slavery. in 479 bc, the greeks repelled the persians from greece and ionia. miletus was lost to persia again in 387 bc, after the end of the corinthian war. it would be liberated by alexander through a siege in 334 bc. after his death in 323 bc, it was passed to antigonus until 301 bc, then to lysimachus until 281 bc and eventually to antiochus ii. 2 years later, the ptolemies took it and it flourished as center of literature. when the ptolemaic empire fell in 31 bc, miletus came under roman rule.
in the advent of christianity, apostle paul met there the elders of the ephesian church in 57 ad.
in byzantium, isidorus of miletus helped design the hagia sophia. it would be taken by the seljuks in the aftermath of 1071. but it would return to byzantium with the help of alexius comnenus in the 1st crusade. in 1204, it would come under nicaean rule, until its permanent fall to the seljuks, shortly after.

Syros island is famous for its astonishing architecture which spreads throughout the capital of ermoupolis including elements from the cycladic layout, the medieval era, and the neoclassical architecture. the impressive town consists of two settlements and counts on remarkable venetian buildings, marble squares, neoclassical buildings and imposing churches that draw the attention.
a great number of architectural marvels are found in the town of ermoupolis. exquisite specimens of neoclassical architecture, old mansions and whitewashed houses ascending the hill. in close distance lie the marvelous churches, known as the jewels of syros architecture.
ano syros, the other settlement of syros, has adopted many venetian characteristics and still retains its medieval character. countless marble stairs between the narrow paths lined by the lovely houses with the colored doors and windows that lead to the top of the town will fascinate you. of high interest is the catholic church of agios georgios that rests on top of the settlement.
houses offer a panoramic view to the sea and characterize for their rich diversity. built by the venetians, ano syros is a perfect blend of cycladic and medieval features with wooden balconies, small courtyards, colorful doors, narrow and winding paths, and numerous steps.
