French rococo | a centrepiece class | 23rd may 2018
join us for this very special one-off class this spring! we’ll be creating rococo-inspired centrepiece arrangements using a variety of exquisite seasonal materials: peonies, bearded iris, ranunculus, allium, aquilegia, foxgloves and the first roses of the year.
working in low golden vessels, we will demo how to create an asymmetric composition using the chicken wire technique for structure, layering pale, sugary colours - palest blues and pinks, lemon yellow and gold - with natural shapes, curving stems and gestural flowers. taking inspiration from the frivolity, elegance and light-heartedness of the rococo period we will show how to style your completed design for an artistic series of photographs using props such as swathes of rich silks and velvet, shells and coral.
students will gain a knowledge of basic floral techniques for building an arrangement, how to think about colour, scent and texture, and helpful tips on how to use a range of garden-grown materials to evoke the essence of a particular era, artistic style and season.
a light, seasonal lunch will be provided.

Living vicariously through the great gardens short films on @nowness and @themontydon’s brilliant paradise gardens during this cold spell, longing for the colour and warmth of the months ahead. alternatively, if you can find a flowering daphne to face-plant into, you’ll instantly be transported to balmier climes. the fragrance of this daphne bholua ‘jacqueline postill’ was like a sunlit afternoon in a perfumed garden - pure, distilled optimism.
