Let’s talk about something that triggers me, that’s been on my mind for years, something that makes me cringe and something i have a lot to say about.
the expectation to discount your business on black friday is an expectation to discount your self worth. i know all of you small business owners work just as hard as i do on your craft, products, business, media, marketing, etc. and to be expected to show up and discount ourselves - to be apart of monetizing a holiday that is covering up genocide, murder, and history in the first place. no thanks.
we can give discounts any other day of the year, and most do! the expectation now is to discount, run flash sales, do sales in the story, free shipping (do you know how expensive that is?!) and lower our value!
discounts are great, and every business needs them from time to time for a variety of different reasons. but to perpetuate black friday’s roots in selfish, money-hungery, corporate greed is something i won’t be getting behind this year. after working for a company for 15 years that sees similar views in black friday sales (thank god) i learned that consumers (mass) don’t give a s**t about prices and will still buy, even if you don’t discount. they don’t care about lines, or specials, or even shopping for other’s on the day that’s deemed to be the biggest “holiday” shopping day of the year. it isn’t. black friday is another day for self indulgence. no one is buying gifts. they’re buying a concept.
i’ve worked hard not only on my business structure, my “brand,” but my craft. i’ve put in time and effort and resources to become hype priestess for you all (and myself) and i look forward to opening at prices that reflect my talent (finally!) i’ve worked h*****n accepting my worth, from not wanting to charge for tarot the first year i practiced, to now seeing that people need my advice, my light, my healing. i am worthy of payment! and i will not discount myself because society says i have to.
hopefully you all will see this and understand. it’s not against the small business consumer. (cont in comments below + plus tag photo cred if known)
