sherlock the shepherd is a dog who has a hard time controlling his mind from racing at 100 miles /hr.
he cannot stay still. he cannot stay quiet. he cannot relax. he has to be constantly doing something.
giving him nothing but freedom, enrichment and exercise will not help him to know how to “do nothing”. as a matter of fact, by constantly encouraging him to find something to do, it becomes harder for him to relax his mind and just let go.
in this clip, you can see how he was whining and kept trying to get up in the beginning.
we did not use any treats, did not talk to him in baby voices, did not tell him it’s okay, did not give him any command, did not tell him no... we stayed very detached, aloof, and we “did nothing” but stepping on the leash very calmly and quietly.
as we “did nothing”, he started to calm down and “did nothing” as well.
eventually, he stopped his whining, and was able to hold his down stay on his own without us stepping on his leash.
