Basic kitchen skills
•••
last year for my birthday @alg341 gifted me a basic knife skills class. in the class we were taught how cut different veggies into different shapes (that have names that i can't remember).
•••
these skills have continued to come in handy. it makes cooking faster and, believe it or not, food taste better. (evenly chopped food can be seasoned and cooked evenly. go figure.)
•••
investing in learning some basic skills and getting some decent kitchen equipment can make cooking at home much easier. cooking at home can/will make your weight loss goals more successful.

“carving a notch” with the spindle.  this is just another way to end up with an ember.  i have come to refer to this approach as a “tunnel hearth”, where instead of carving a notch, a tunnel is cut perpendicular to the direction that the spindle will dig in.

i have made a few posts about this using a knife to cut out the tunnel, but i have recently been playing around with another idea that i had a while back; drilling it out with spindle.
rather than using up energy and material driving a full thickness spindle through the wood, i thinned it out into a drill bit tip with a taper so that it could slowly widen out the hole into a cone shaped tunnel.

the main advantage to the tunnel hearth is that it can be used on a stick or piece of wood that might not be wide enough to accommodate both the divot and a notch.  it also seems to make for easier embers with soft material; possibly because heat is being trapped in the tunnel and bringing the dust up to a higher temperature.

this could also be very useful if you wanted to try a “no-knife” bow drill set; though you would probably be more efficient using two spindles made from round sticks; with a thin one for the tunnel and a thicker one to go for the ember.

as some of you have noticed, i’m a big fan of the classic v-notch, and still find that to be the most reliable approach in various conditions, but these quirkier methods have their place too; and are worth practicing.
the set and curls were made from western red cedar, with a douglas fir bearing block, and # 36 bank line on a vine maple bow.

credit to arleigh on bcusa for introducing me to the idea of the tunnel hearth.

This may look like any other bow drill ember, but it was actually made without using a knife to cut the notch.  i didn’t do a great job documenting the process in photos, but i did make a video post that you can check out that should make it pretty clear.
