onesweetmariah's most personal picks week
day one: petals (track 12, rainbow album, 1999)
say hi to my first post of onesweetmariah's personal picks week where i will be posting 7 different songs written and released by mariah that are the most personal and insightful of her discography. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
the first song i wanted to mention was petals, the 12th track off of the 1999 rainbow album. mariah herself has credited the song for being one of the most honest songs she has ever written and personally as a fan it made me respect her a lot as a person and really understand the struggles she faced particularly during her marriage to tommy. in the song, mariah talks about her lack of trust for her family (more specifically her older sister, angela) "a flower taught me how to pray, but as i grew that flower changed....i wish there was a way for me to trust you", her relationship with tommy's children and how it has suffered as a result of her broken marriage "we bonded through despondency, i stayed so long but finally, i fled to save my sanity" but the most poignant lyrics in the song for me are right at the end when mariah whispers "i really loved you......i guess i loved you". that part is very powerful and indicative of how much mariah tried to keep her marriage together. have a listen! ♥⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
