diastasis recti is commonly seen in women 👩🏻 during and post pregnancy 🤰🏽.
it has been typically defined as a gap or splitting of the abdominal muscles and often contributes to the appearance of a "mummy tummy".
the appropriate assessment and treatment protocol has been controversial in the past.
exciting, preliminary canadian 🇨🇦 research is showing some updated insights on diastasis recti assessment and treatment.
the distance between the abdominals was previously used to determine the severity of the dr. now, researchers are saying it is more the tissue integrity (strength and depth to which you can push your fingers in) which is more relevant than the actual distance apart.
your pelvic floor muscles work with your abdominal muscles. you must be able to contract your pelvic floor muscles in order to have a strong 💪core.
diastasis recti is caused by excessive pressure on the abdominal wall. growing a baby 🤰puts pressure on your abdominals. but breathing 💨 technique and posture can also be major contributors!
women should be allowed to move during labour and not be confined to a bed.
intense, breath holding type of pushing should be avoided. women should ideally wait until they feel the urge to push on their own if possible.

do you go to the washroom 🚽 before leaving the house 🏠 .....just in case?
stop! 🛑 ✋
feeling the urge to go is a reflex. our bladder sends a signal to our brain 🧠 telling us to empty it once it is full.
emptying your bladder before it is truly full can disrupt this reflex.
disrupting this reflex may result in you having to go to the washroom 🚽 more frequently throughout the day.
your brain 🧠 begins to think your bladder is full before it truly is.
overtime this could develop into urinary frequency, urgency or overactive bladder syndrome.
the consensus is that 6-10 washroom 🚽 breaks per day is “normal”.
but not to worry if your “normal” is more or less than this. if your frequency hasn’t suddenly changed or isn’t affecting your day to day life there should be no cause for concern!
