I was going to send these to @popi_the_vizsla in a dm, but then decided to share them publicly, just in case anyone else shares our enthusiasm for the greatness of smurf chips. i think that smurfs could be partly to blame for my interest in tiny creatures #womanchild #smurf #smurfs #smurfette #junkfood #chips #scientistlife #lifeinkenya #cute #nofilter

***did you know*** oxpeckers feed on ticks, flies, lice and worms that can be extracted from the fur of domestic cattle, buffalos, rhinos, giraffes and large antelopes. despite removing these pests however, the oxpecker is considered a parasite as it also feeds on the blood of it's hosts!

For kenyans, there's no greater gift than the gift of edible animals. after stuffing us full of pilau, our friends sent us home with a turkey (already slaughtered and cleaned because they know i don't do that sort of thing).

Long, long day doing grocery shopping in kisumu today - such a necessary drama! we hadn't been to the supermarket since july 10! my day started at 5:30 am so that we could get on the road early, and it's just finishing now - at around 11 pm - after finally getting the chance to eat dinner. it often feels like a race against time to pack the groceries away once we get back, partly to help avoid the ants from noticing the new food in the house. i'm feeling exhausted but it's really good to have more supplies. we also went to get burgers while we were in kisumu - my first opportunity to eat one since may! have to say, this sure made me grateful. in fact, i think my excitement at eating a burger puzzled the waitress - i wouldn't let her remove my plate until i had eaten every last crumb! 😝 i'm not really one to post food photos, but i went to such great lengths to bring back a slice of cake and an apple pie that i decided it was worthy of a post. it's probably not going to be the best food photo you've seen today, but to me it's gold. gold!! 🤤😂 #mydayinkenya #lifeinkenya #africa #kenya #travel #traveladventures #lifeinafrica #gratitude

doing arts and crafts encourage children to play imaginatively and creatively. this helps us to raise creative thinkers. creativity also fuels the ability to innovate and explore new unfamiliar areas.

***did you know*** when a lioness is in heat (estrus), she will pair up with a male for the next 4-5 days. over this time period, they will mate on average every 15 minutes! this means they can mate up to 480 times during the full 5 days! during copulation, the male bites at the nape of the lionesses' neck.

***did you know*** dik-diks mark their territory with 'tears'. well, preorbital glandular fluid, to be exact. it comes from the black spot in the corner of their eyes. dik-diks bury their heads in grass, poking their eyes with it to spread the sticky secretion. they also use their u***e and feces to make a place smell like home.

Visiting nyanya upcountry. i think the thing i have loved most this trip is just how much my girls are loving playing outside with dirt and rocks and leaves. all day. they haven’t asked me for an ipad once. it’s so fun watching their little imaginations flare up. mercy is busy climbing trees (and falling out of them). amina is always fascinated by dirt and has her fingers all up in it. man, i’m digging this rural life. except the fact that i can’t find a decent cup of coffee within a 100km radius. #needgoodcoffee #notthatinstantstuff #villagelife #noscreens #nofilter #dirt #outside

***did you know*** gerenuks use their long necks and strong hind legs to eat in an interesting way!
gerenuks certainly know how to use their bodies in a clever way. they utilize their long necks to reach plants that grow high, some as tall as six to eight feet. they are also able to feed while standing straight up on their hind legs, using their forelegs to pull down tree branches. how unique! #gerenuk#giraffegazelle#gerenukfact#samburu#safarisnaps#longneck#usefulbody#clevereating#wildlifefacts#lifeinkenya#didyouknow#africanwildlife#kenyawildlife#interesting#feedstandingup#herbivore#elegant#wow @[email protected]@natgeokidsuk

Full full full!! our hearts are so full after a couple amazing days with our family in eldoret. for people who actually have no blood relation at all and are literally half way across the world from my home, they sure know how to love us so hard that you would think we are their own flesh and blood. please note that mercy has her head turned away in the picture cause she was having a full on meltdown because we were leaving babu and kogo. she just wanted to stay forever. as we left eldoret yesterday, i couldn’t help but thank god that he gave us this special week with the most wonderful people. what an amazing gift it has been! #family #thickerthanblood #eldoret #toddlermeltdown
