I treasure this drawing signed by various members of my son @cnowak411 and my sister’s families. today is the two year anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. .
.
you wouldn’t think that they would give you news like that over the phone. after i heard the word “malignant” my mind went into an altered state and i heard other words...surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. my heart started racing and i felt like i couldn’t breathe. .
.
i didn’t know that paul was in the garage so when i called out to him he didn’t answer. i picked up the phone and dialed my sister. we were both in shock...after all just 15 days earlier, our mom had died. .
.
i found paul, and when i told him i can still see the look in his eyes. we hugged and cried and had no idea what was ahead of us. .
.
that began a series of doctor’s appointments, scans and plans for surgery. .
.
chemo started just 3 weeks after my radical hysterectomy where they removed my uterus, cervix, tubes, ovaries, omentum and 19 lymph nodes. .
.
chemo was the toughest thing i’ve ever been through which culminated in chemo related sepsis. at that time my prayer was “thy will be done” as i lay in the hospital for 8 days. it wasn’t my time to go, because i made it through and completed my chemo in april 2017. .
.
i still have neuropathy related to chemo but it’s something i’ve learned to live with. luckily i never needed radiation. .
.
i continue to be free from cancer but i don’t assume i’m out of the woods and don’t take a single day for granted. i’m doing everything i can to stay in good health. .
.
thanks to everyone who supported me throughout the toughest time of my life so far. you will never know how much it meant to me. .

Playing around with bands again today during my back workout at @theedgefitnessclubs . i’m not a huge fan of the seat being on an angle for cable rows it just feels odd. second video was a superset that i messed around with my tempo and focused more on holding at the bottom. workout fueled by @universalusa @animalpak @universalnutrition

After camping all weekend my low back hasn’t been very happy with me so i switched up some things on my ham glute calve abs day. first video is actually sped up 2x because i was doing 5 second holds at the top and very slow controlled negatives. i did this to take my low back out of the equation and to use much lighter weight than normal. it was far harder than i thought it would be. then i continued with the slower pace for the rest of the workout at @lafitness which was fueled by @universalusa @animalpak @universalnutrition

Got home from maine and didn’t even change before i went to the gym to get a quick chest and shoulder workout in at @lafitness. this is a brutal chest finisher done on a smith machine starting at the bottom do push-ups until you can’t use good form move it up one notch and keep going. also thought i would give this version of front raises a try. workout fueled by @animalpak @universalnutrition @universalusa

I swore i couldn’t lose weight. i blamed it on age, hormones, slow metabolism. and then my mother-in-law got cancer and wasn’t able to eat. i saw what happens when you don’t eat enough…you lose weight. .
.
of course losing weight due to illness is the last thing any of us would want to do, but it did make me think about the amount of food i was consuming. .
.
i discovered the happy body program and the authors recommended eating under 1000 calories a day. what!! i’ll starve i thought, but i didn’t. .
.
their plan is designed to only lose about 0.8 pounds a week. the exercises help maintain your muscle mass while losing body fat. the meals are spaced so that you never get too hungry which keeps cortisol level in check. .
.
the proof is in the photos. not only did the happy body program help me to lose weight. i am sleeping better, feel lighter (duh! i am), gained flexibility, strength, no more aches and pains in my knees and back, sleeping like a baby (and i don’t mean up every 2 hours crying!) i’m also more relaxed which i attribute to the meditation part of the program. .
.
my posture has improved as you can see in the side photos and i have gained a lot of confidence because i feel so d**n healthy!! .
.
the photos were taken on june 25, august 7 and today. so, this is what 12 weeks of progress looks like. .
.
i can’t wait to see where i am in march 2019 when i expect to hit my final goals! i am a happy body for life enthusiast for sure.

I’m holding 18 pounds of kerry gold butter. just had to create this visual to show how much weight i’ve lost since the beginning of the year. only 3 pounds lost before the happy body program and the other 15 since i started june 25. imagine i carried that everyday before i lost the weight. still have more to go. the process continues. .

Still contemplating this idea of writing a taco diet cookbook. this will be a part of the 5 minute taco section.

for this meal i just bought a rotisserie chicken, heated up some beans and topped the @latortillafactory non-gmo corn tortillas (😋) with beans, rotisserie chicken, avocado, and salsa and topped with a heaping pile of cilantro.
.
i like using lots of cilantro, because not only is it an excellent source of vitamin a and vitamin k, it also has antibacterial properties, and it acts as a chelator if heavy metals, helping to remove them from the body.
.
in animal and human studies cilantro has shown to reduce the levels of toxic metals such as mercury, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and aluminum as well as enhance the effectiveness of antibiotics in antibiotic resistant infections.
.
you know what’s cool? we’ve made it a custom practice to put herbs and spices on our foods and these very herbs and spices served not only to make the food taste better, but also to protect us from becoming infected by any pathogens in our food among other things.
