My father used to cultivate #copal as a young boy. copal is an ancient medicinal, aromatic, and sacred resin. he tells us the stories of being 8 years old, and preparing to live in #elcerro, or "the hills." taking palm mats to sleep on. taking butters, beans, coffee, and veggies to eat. also necessary, were vaccines for scorpion bites.
the process takes three months, from august to october. a tree is cut, and the "blood" is harvested on an agave branches that serve as makeshift molds. once the cut is drained, the process is repeated until the rains stop. the tree gives nothing when it is not raining. this process can only be done during the rainy season.
the cultivators believe that this process is sacred, and must be done with respect and dignity to the tree. the aztec people believed blood was sacred. copal is used in #ofrendas. it is believed that the dead come to visit on the day of the dead, and they leave happy after smelling copal. copal can never be absent from an ofrenda. copal was offered to the gods by the aztec people. copal is used to smudge homes. the smoke keeps negative energies, evil entities, and ill wills out. copal purifies the air, both spiritually and aromatically, it is burned in various churches. copal is also known to help ailments of the skin and bones. lastly, as copal has a celestial scent, it is used in perfumeries.
