Neil armstrong's apollo 11 a7l suit during its recent restoration at the smithsonian's air and space museum.
-----------------------------
ilc dover apollo seamstress joanne thompson recalls the constant testing required to ensure the suit could withstand the harshness of space- “we had to make different types of seam samples and they would send them to the test lab and they would test them until they tore. we used to make them all day long and knew they were gonna be trashed. but we knew a man's life was going to depend on it so we just kept on going.”

For the last three apollo missions- 15, 16, and 17, the spacesuits were revised to allow greater mobility and ease of use with the lunar rover. originally developed by ilc dover as the "a9l," but given the designation "a7lb" by nasa, the new suit incorporated joints at the neck and waist. the waist joint was added to allow the astronaut to sit on the lunar roving vehicle and the neck joint was to provide additional visibility while driving the lrv. because of the waist joint, the six life-support connectors were rearranged from the parallel pattern to a set of two "triangles," and the back zipper was revised and relocated.

Esa has taken the wraps off its concept for the spacesuit glove of the future. derived from the space agency's two-year pextex project aimed at finding new spacesuit materials, the mockup glove designed by the comex company and designer agatha medioni incorporates new gadgets to help future astronauts with their work.

though science fiction films may have led many to believe that spacesuits are glorified scuba gear with funny helmets, they are, in fact, remarkably complex pieces of technology. a spacesuit is really a miniature spaceship.
unfortunately, modern space gloves leave much to be desired.

the american version, for example, is very clumsy, cold to wear, and tends to s***p off the astronaut's fingernails. to address some of these problems, esa is looking at new materials and technologies for future spacesuits.

these new gloves have three extra functions in addition to protecting an astronaut’s hands from the vacuum of space. they can be used to control a martian drone or lunar rover with gestures alone. they have an integrated laser light that can measure distances or target objects. lastly, the materials have a display to show the status of supplies such as oxygen levels. current spacesuits have this display on the torso and astronauts use a mirror on their wrist to be able to see it.

The far side of the moon is the hemisphere of the moon that always faces away from earth. the far side's terrain is rugged with a multitude of impact craters and relatively few flat lunar maria compared to the near side. it has one of the largest craters in the solar system, the south pole–aitken basin. about 18 percent of the far side is occasionally visible from earth due to libration. the remaining 82 percent remained unobserved until 1959, when it was photographed by the soviet luna 3 space probe. the soviet academy of sciences published the first atlas of the far side in 1960. the apollo 8 astronauts were the first humans to see the far side in person when they orbited the moon in 1968. all manned and unmanned soft landings had taken place on the near side of the moon, until 3 january 2019 when the chang'e 4 spacecraft made the first landing on the far side.

Can you believe we can see the moon from earth ? woah! have you seen the rabbit in the moon? there is something deeply hypnotic about a full moon - especially if its a big f*t mega moon, looming massive from the horizon. the moon literally has a pull on us - tides, flows, energy, movement. many of our religious festivals are guided by the moon phases.

can you even see the moon most days from where you live? why not try sitting in your space when the full moon is rising - how does that make you feel ?

On july 20, 1969, neil armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface, becoming the first person to walk on the moon. the man who said, “every human has a finite number of heartbeats,” spent absolutely no time wasting any of his. armstrong’s pioneering step is still regarded as one of the greatest moments in human history. armstrong died on august 25, 2012, at the age of 82. he will forever be remembered as the man who took one giant leap for all of us.

this quote of armstrong may not be the one he is famous for but it is just as meaningful as the other on.

“it suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the earth. i put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet earth. i didn’t feel like a giant. i felt very, very small.”

we all should take this quote to ourselves and realize how small we actually are in the geat world.

On july 31, 1999 the spacecraft lunar prospect crashed into the moon. it was a mission to detect frozen water on the moon's surface. the craft had been launched on january 6, 1998. researchers hoped that the impact would release water vapor from the suspected ice deposits and that the plume would be detectable from earth, but no plume was observed.

Nasa’s gateway lunar orbiting outpost

nasa has described the gateway as key to the new era of lunar explorations both in the orbit and on the surface of the moon. one of the most unique features of the gateway is that it can be moved to other orbits around the moon to conduct more research.

the gateway will be the first spaceship in orbit around the moon. nasa and its partners will prepare the first two major components for launch in 2023, preloaded with science experiments that will make it an operational deep space science laboratory even before humans get there. the first two components are the power and propulsion element (ppe) and the habitation and logistics outpost (halo).⁣

the ppe, built by maxartechnologies, is the gateway’s power house, maintaining its position in lunar orbit and powering other gateway spacecraft elements. it also provides powerful moon-to-earth communications.⁣

halo, built by northropgrumman ,is the initial crew cabin for astronauts visiting the gateway that is about the size of a small studio apartment. it has multiple docking ports for visiting spacecraft and cargo space for science experiments and storage.⁣

the ppe and halo are just the start of the gateway. other spacecraft will join them over time, making it more and more capable as a lunar science and exploration outpost. from the gateway, astronauts will board lunar landers to embark on exciting expeditions on the surface of the moon.

the gateway is being built by both international and commercial partners and will support exploration on and near the moon and later to mars as well.

The indian space research organisation (isro) has announced that it will be publicly releasing all the science data from chandrayaan-2 for global use. and, this includes the images that went behind creating the highest-resolution 3d map of the moon.

the orbiter is home to eight out of the 14 payloads, or instruments, that were aboard chandrayaan-2 when it took off from earth. even though vikram — chandrayaan 2’s lander — didn’t make it, the orbiter has still been looking high and low for new discoveries, including the presence of water.

here are some images that were released by @isroindiaofficial in the past one year.

July 22,2019 chandrayaan 2 orbiter-lander-rover mission launched by india !!!

chandrayaan-2 "mooncraft" is the second lunar exploration mission developed by the indian space research organisation (isro), after chandrayaan-1. as of september 2019, it consists of a lunar orbiter, and also included the vikram lander, and the pragyan lunar rover, all of which were developed in india. the main scientific objective is to map and study the variations in lunar surface composition, as well as the location and abundance of lunar water.

the spacecraft was launched on its mission to the moon from the second launch pad at the satish dhawan space centre in andhra pradesh on 22 july 2019 at 2.43 p.m. ist (09:13 utc) by a gslv mark iii m1. the craft reached the moon's orbit on 20 august 2019 and began orbital positioning manoeuvres for the landing of the vikram lander. the lander and the rover were scheduled to land on the near side of the moon, in the south polar region at a latitude of about 70° south on 6 september 2019 and conduct scientific experiments for one lunar day, which approximates to two earth weeks. a successful soft landing would have made india the fourth country after the soviet union, united states and china to do so.

however, the lander deviated from its intended trajectory while attempting to land on 6 september 2019 which caused a 'hard landing'. according to a failure analysis report submitted to isro, the crash was caused by a software glitch. isro may re-attempt a landing by the second quarter of 2021 with chandrayaan-3.

In the late 1960s, while @nasa’s apollo program planned for humanity’s first steps on the moon, stanley kubrick and his production team worked on their own ambitious voyage, 2001: a space odyssey. this thurs (7/23), join director todd douglas miller (apollo 11 now streaming on @hulu ), bill barry (nasa chief historian), and bert ulrich (nasa multimedia liaison) for a conversation on the cultural and scientific points of intersection between the two, including rare archival footage and images. rsvp, link in our bio.

51 years ago today, humanity stepped foot on another celestial body and into history. mission commander neil armstrong documented the lunar mission and snapped this image of lunar module pilot buzz aldrin, as he carried the passive seismic experiments package (in his left hand) and the laser ranging retroreflector (in his right) to the deployment area. these two experiments made up the early apollo scientific experiment package. this photograph was taken at tranquility base in our moon's mare tranquillitatis, or sea of tranquility.

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗼𝗻 (𝟮𝟬 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟵)
on this day in 1969, apollo 11 astronauts neil armstrong and buzz aldrin landed their moon module on a broad dark lunar lava flow, called the sea of tranquility. six hours later at 10:56 p.m. edt, neil armstrong became the first human being to walk on the surface of the moon.  he marked the moment with a phrase, “that’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

the american effort to send astronauts to the moon has its origins in a famous appeal president john f. kennedy made to a special joint session of congress on may 25, 1961: “i believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.” at the time, the united states was still trailing the soviet union in space developments, and cold war-era america welcomed kennedy’s bold proposal.

after months of preparation, preceded by years of development and testing, the crew of nasa’s apollo 11 lifted off from florida on july 16, arriving at the moon on july 19. while command module pilot michael collins remained in lunar orbit, armstrong and lunar module pilot edwin “buzz” aldrin descended to the surface and spent two and a half hours on the moon, setting up experiments, taking photos, and gathering samples. they collected 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of moon rocks for return to earth.

they returned safely to earth and landed in the pacific ocean on july 24, 1969. later the crew were celebrated by politicians and the public as they embarked on a 45-day goodwill tour, visiting a total of 27 cities in 24 countries.

51 years since we first landed on the moon today. i thought i'd have some fun with these renderings and styleframes of the moon in octane and cinema 4d. i also used a pixelsquid object for the apollo module. this was especially fun to create since it's all 3d but the textures are so good you really do feel like your are viewing the actual moon through your computer monitor.
it's almost sobering to know that there are entire generations that won't understand the science and ingenuity that went behind sending humans to the moon.

At ilc dover in 1969, finishing touches are applied to one section of an apollo spacesuit on a long-arm sewing machine, built specially for manufacturing the spacesuits.
sewing a spacesuit is no easy feat- tolerances, or margin of error allowed in measurements, are often as small as 1/64th of an inch (without using any pins)- that's the width of a hair!

A hauntingly beautiful image of space shuttle discovery during the sts-42 mission in 1992.

discovery carried into orbit the international microgravity laboratory-1 (iml-1), a pressurized crewed spacelab module, to explore in depth the complex effects of weightlessness on living organisms and materials processing. the international crew, divided into red and blue teams, conducted experiments on the human nervous system's adaptation to low gravity and the effects of microgravity on other life forms such as shrimp eggs, lentil seedlings, fruit fly eggs and bacteria.

Lunar loo challenge: as nasa aims for the lofty goal of returning people to the moon by 2024, the space agency is looking for help in solving a rather mundane problem. nasa has issued a design challenge for a compact toilet that will work on the moon. there are already microgravity toilets on the international space station, but the challenge is to design a loo that will also work in lunar gravity. the top three design teams will share a $35,000 prize. there’s also junior category for inventors under 18. learn more: https://www.herox.com/lunarloo.

Phobos is largely believed to be made up of carbonaceous chondrites. the violent phase that phobos has seen is visible in the large section gouged out from a past collision. stickney, the largest crater on phobos, along with the other craters (shklovsky, roche & grildrig) were also visible in the image, said isro.

American geologist & astronaut harrison schmitt turns 85 years old today [b. 1935]. schmitt was part of nasa astronaut group 4, selected in june 1965. this was the first nasa scientist-astronaut group.

schmitt flew into space only once, as the lunar module pilot on the last of the apollo missions, apollo 17 (7-19 december 1972). schmitt was assigned by nasa under pressure from the scientific community to send a professional geologist trained as a pilot, rather than a professional pilot trained in geology, and so schmitt remains the only professional geologist to set foot on the moon (he had been scheduled to fly on apollo 18, but was reassigned out of the normal rotation when apollo 18 was canceled).

since apollo 17 was the last lunar mission, schmitt is also the next-to-last person to step off the moon, just before mission commander eugene cernan [1934-2017], on 13 december 1972.

schmitt's geologically trained eyes allowed him to better recognize the most valuable rock samples. in particular, schmitt collected the sample designated troctolite 76535, which turns out to be the oldest known unshocked lunar sample, the single most valuable moon rock for studying the thermal & magnetic histories of the moon.

schmitt retired from nasa in 1975 and subsequently served one term as a u.s. senator for the state of new mexico (1977-1983). schmitt's experience on the moon emphasizes the value of carrying relevant scientists, especially geologists, when contemplating human exploration of mars.

the picture shows schmitt posing with the american flag, and planet earth, during the first eva of apollo 17, on 11 december 1972.
