Daniel is a baking and juice-making rock star. he has been working at tra la la juice bar for ten years and if you haven't tried the banana chocolate muffins there, you're missing out. tra la la juice bar and rainbo fish are part of the same business, the oldest continuously operating business in the essex street market. in the mid-1970s, ira stolzenberg graduated from art school and his father gave him a fishmonger stall at the market as a gift. right around that time, ira met ron budinas and the two became partners in business and life for the next 40 years. as the neighborhood changed, so did their business model. in the 1990s, as ira and ron noticed more and more young people popping their heads in the door at the market, they decided to experiment with expanding the business beyond selling fresh fish and added fresh squeezed juices, smoothies, baked goods, and fish sandwiches. the plan worked and they were the first to make and serve prepared foods inside the market. now today, you can still stop by the stall to talk fish and buy fresh salmon, yellowfin tuna, or lemon sole from felix or ira, all sourced from the fulton fish wholesale market in the bronx, or you can come on by for a muffin fresh out of the oven, and many are even named after or inspired by customers (as in "alex's banana chocolate muffin" & "jonathan's blueberry muffin"). sadly, last year ron passed away but his love of baking is carried on by ira and daniel. it's that personal touch with customers, combined with scrumptious food and high quality ingredients, that keeps this business thriving even still today. thanks, daniel, for sharing your refreshing rise n' shine juice (grapefruit, apple, lime, and mint), and those delicious muffins on the tour today. we adore these guys, and love sharing their story and food with friends and visitors! .
