This mama is about to give birth to a baby asplanchna. look how cute the baby girl is! 😍 i get attached to my pond babies so fast. i washed this slide into my pond aquarium like 10 minutes after recording this so they would get old in a couple of days and die from natural causes.
asplanchna is an animal, so they are multicellular organisms, just like the kitties, doggies, and the annoying uncles we all have. 😂 but asplanchna has a different way to reproduce; females create female babies without fertilization. this is called parthenogenesis. it is common among microscopic animals; that's why i refer to them as "she" most of the time.
males are really rare, and they only produced under certain stressful conditions to form stress-resisting eggs. but they don't have a proper digestive system, and they die from starvation.
asplanchna is also ovoviviparous; eggs can hatch inside the mother's body, and then the babies are released into the environment. can you see that she has another baby inside her?
let's name the baby girl please? she looks like a muriel to me. 😂

The cytoskeleton is in charge of providing structure to the cell during movement, division, adhesion, and many other biological processes. these structures are so essential to life that they are highly conserved across organisms. even dictyostelium (commonly known as “slime mold”) and yeast have nearly identical cytoskeletons to humans.
components of the cytoskeleton work together to ensure proper function. for example during cell division, the microtubule cytoskeleton is responsible for separating chromosomes equally between the cells while the actin cytoskeleton is responsible for dividing the cell in half. defects in one component often affect others and can have devastating effects in organisms.

today i'm doing a simple blood smear technique. after i've my blood slides. i am experimenting which regiment will fix the red blood cells the most and be most visible under the microscope. i used 95% alcohol and 80% methanol. after fixation of the blood cells i cover slip every slide. this preserves the quality and existence of the blood cells. after i'm able to examine the cells under a microscope i can take a picture.

Here is a gorgeous shot of a transverse section of the triangular stem of cyperus papyrus.
this plant was the first plant used to make paper by ancient egyptians. it is surprising that a detailed record of the process by which the egyptians transformed the pith of the papyrus plant into sheets has never been found.
the most commonly held theory on the manufacture of a papyrus sheet is as follows: strips were cut longitudinally along the pith either parallel through the triangular shape or along the sides of each triangular face. the strips were then laid down on a smooth surface, parallel to each other and slightly overlapping. then a second layer of strips are laid on top of and perpendicular to the first. this laminate sheet was then rolled and/or pressed.
a second, more recent theory of the ancient manufacture of papyrus sheets was derived from an interpretation of pliny's description of the process. the pith was not cut into strips but was peeled continuously down to its core [hendricks 1984, 31]. two of these peeled layers were then pressed together perpendicular to each other to form a single sheet. according to wallert, these different manufacturing processes (strip vs. peeling) result in distinct and characteristic surface textures which are sometimes visible with a scanning electron microscope and, at times, with a stereo microscope [wallert 1989].

The indiana hand to shoulder center is proud to announce the completion of the second year of orthopedic research boot camp.
high school students selected for the program undergo an intense hands on experience in orthopedic research conducting an actual publishable research project.
students go in to lab with one on one mentors where they will dissect a cadaver arm and perform the biomechanical research utilizing a state of the art test apparatus designed and custom built by the purdue engineering school.
students learn about the actual work of an orthopedic surgeon. they learn problem solving, eye-hand coordination, the scientific process, and the process of scientific authorship. they gain a significant addition to their resume - authorship on a scientific publication.
