Hand up if you ever crave something sweet after meals! 💁🏼‍♀️💁🏼‍♀️💁🏼‍♀️ a few frozen dates or a square of dark chocolate usually does the trick for me...but lately i’m loving my dessert teas! this is by far my absolute #favourite tea! seriously, it makes the whole kitchen smell sweet and nutty. and it’s a vibrant pink, which makes it that much more fun to drink. if you’re in ottawa, you can find it at @exploreterra20 . but they better not be sold out next time i’m there! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #vegan #plantbased #plantstrong #wholefoodsplantbased #wholefoods #registereddietitian #nutritionexpert #vegandietitian #nutritionist #rd #rdn #8020rule #balancednutrition #mindfuleating #antidiet #wellness #vegansofig #dietitiansofig #ottawavegan #tea #teaislife #herbaltea #teagram #rdtips @tealishtea

❓what kind of rice do you usually use❓let me know! ⤵️⠀

personally we use either basmati or jasmin rice for the most part but growing up my mom used a lot of white long-grain rice. i’ll use brown rice if it’s mixed in with some sauce or salad and i’ve recently started dabbling with arborio rice which is the short grain rice you use to make risottos. ⠀

but what’s with all these different kinds of rice, how do people choose which one to use?⠀

first, brown vs white. a grain of rice has 4 layers. the outermost is the hull which is removed in all kinds of rice. the second is the bran which remains in brown or whole rice and this is what makes brown rice a “whole grain”. it’s a nutrient dense layer. the third layer is the endosperm and this is what is most commonly consumed as white rice. and inside the endosperm is the germ which is also a source of nutrients in a rice grain. ⠀

second the length of grain is important. long grain rice is separate, fluffy, and light when cooked. medium grain is more moist and tender than long grain and the rice has a greater tendency to stick together. shirt grain is wider than it is long and is sticky when cooked. ⠀

besides these two characteristics different rice grains will have different flavor and aroma profiles depending on the type of rice they are. for example basmati is a long grain with a nutty flavor. jasmine is a long grain with floral flavor/aroma. brown rice can be long, medium, or short grain and had a nutty flavor. arborio rice is a medium grainy that is creamy when cooked. ⠀

•zinc carnosine•
there are many factors that can lead to increased intestinal permeability (aka “leaky gut”), such as consuming high amounts of refined sugar & overly processed foods full of chemicals, stress, lack of sleep, over exercising, medications, & over the counter pain relievers. & we have already discussed several things that you can do to help heal leaky gut.  these include vitamin d3, restore4life, colostrum, a good quality fish oil, curcumin, & l-glutamine.  but one of the most well-researched to date is zinc carnosine.
our bodies naturally try to heal.  when we get a cut or a scrape, our skin’s cells try to cover up the damage.  the same thing happens inside our digestive tract.  when our gut lining is damaged, our bodies try to heal it up. & zinc carnosine greatly speeds up this process.
one of the most well-known over the counter meds that damages our gut mucosa is nsaids such as aspirin, tylenol, & ibuprophen.  studies suggest that 10-30% of people taking nsaids have some stomach ulceration caused by them, but they have no symptoms (and therefore do not know there is a problem). there is also a risk of small intestinal injury with nsaid use.  proton pump inhibitors are often prescribed along with nsaids to reduce stomach ulcers, but they do not help to prevent injury in the small intestine (which leads to leaky gut).
a study published in 2007 demonstrated that when zinc carnosine was taken concurrently with the nsaid, that there was no increase in permeability in the small intestine.  the zinc carnosine, taken at the usual dosage of 37.5 mg twice daily, caused a three-fold increase in the body’s ability to heal in both the stomach & small intestine.
zinc carnosine has also been helpful in the treatment of h. pylori.  because of its ability to speed up mucosal healing by three times, it is useful for those desiring to maintain the integrity of their gut lining.
integrative therapeutics makes a great zinc carnosine, & it is one of the first things on board with my clients in their gut-healing protocol.
ever wondered if you have “leaky gut”? maybe you’re wondering if there are actual tests for that.  yes, there are! (more on that later!)

Question: tell me in the comments section below would you rather be courageous or confident?
.
.
“courage is unconditional where as confidence depends upon the situation at hand.”
.
.
i’d rather be courageous! i’m at the final stage of releasing phase one of my educational content on my website & boy oh boy is it daunting 😅!
.
.
to be honest the thought crossed my mind last week not release my content because it may not be useful for #futuredietitians, new dietitians, or any #dieteticintern. quickly i said “bye felicia, bye” and realized that was just the devil 😈talking!
.
.
last week on my youtube channel i’ve received messages from interns currently studying for the #rdexam requesting i create more educational content to help them prep for the exam. little do they know...that is already in the works 💃🏾. i think you all will be pleased with the educational content i’ve created...stay tuned sneak peek later this week

This little girl loves food already, and i can’t help but watch her eat when we’re together
-
i find it fascinating to witness a child eating without fear, especially after working with adolescents and adults whom experience food fear on a daily basis. her vocabulary is impeccable and she’s a listener, so her innocent relationship with food could easily be contaminated by diet talk, food shaming or even body shaming.
she is the epitome of an intuitive eater. the pure joy on her face when she eats is contagious. from drinking the creamiest fruit/vegetable smoothie to savoring a chocolate frosted donut, she eats without fear and she listens to her body’s wants and needs. 💕🌞🌱🍓🍩🍽

Simple and light suppers for warm evenings. this was fab - 4 big portabello mushrooms and pull out stem to make a big mushroom ‘bowl’. now put them in the oven and bake for 10 mins on a medium heat. now chop and mix 1 ball mozzarella | 1 tomato | 1 onion (fry this until soft beforehand) | 1 tsp green pesto | 1 handful pitted olives. fill the mushrooms until bursting (!) with the mozzarella mixture.... back in the oven for 20 mins! eat with an avocado salad or any green salad .... for a delicious meal 😋. #healthyfood #foodblogger #food #healthy #diet #nutrition #vegetarian #eatwell #yummy #delicious #nutrition #nutritionexpert #mushroom #avocado #olives #pesto #recipe #fastfood

The secret to long term success in a nutshell.....patience and consistency! .
.
.
i know i know, your probably thinking omg lame i already know that but i want to see a change now! listen i get it, i too get that way. instant gratification, if only life was like this. really the best things in life are worth waiting for. am i right?! it is so true especially if you want whatever goal your working toward to stick and last! .
.
.
sure you can do a fad diet or excessively exercise for a few weeks but can it last? is it something you can do forever? start thinking of the choices you make for the long term. if it’s a choice that seems reasonable and worth sticking around forever make the leap. .
.
.
have a lovely monday! ✨

I never want to be f*t again.-
.
true story. that is what i told myself at the age of 13. this is where my journey began.-
.
before this; i was overweight. i was the chubby kid, the f*t friend, the one who was teased. i didn’t love school, i was not involved in any sports. looking back, i was an emotional eater.-
.
the summer of 87’ was all about moving my body and being active. i had no time to sit and eat my emotions. instead my dad had me working on the farm.-
.
in one summer i went from a size 16/18 to size 6. amazing transformation that i did not actively pursue. this was the first time i had seen my stretch marks and realized how f*t i was. this was the first time i looked in the mirror and liked myself.-
.
this was the moment. i decided to never be f*t again. legit. i wanted to be healthy. i liked how i looked but also how i felt.-
.
i’m sure people thought i would gain it all back but what they didn’t know is how determined i was. this is when my love for fitness and muscle started.-
.
my journey began here. we all have to start somewhere. i have been working on being a better version and loving myself since the age of 13. i’ve had some huge achievements and some very dark moments.-
.
i remember what it was like to be overweight. it is what motivates me to take action everyday and invest in myself.-
.
today, it reminds me that i can do anything. it also reminds me that you can do anything.-
.
you want it bad enough, take action.-
.

Food for thought: it takes a mere four minutes to make poached eggs on a bed of wholemeal bread and grilled bacon - that's at least half of the time that it takes to make a ready made meal (the type that's bursting with excess energy and an abundance of added salt, sugar and saturated fat), and 10* minutes less than the time that it takes to order and receive a takeaway (the type that can tighten our trousers if it plays a predominant part in our diet!). it's also packed with nutrient-rich properties (think a complete source of protein, complex carbohydrates and mandatory micronutrients including iodine and vitamins a, b2 and b12 to name but a very few!), and resembles one of the many reasons why 'a lack of time' is simply another exaggerated excuse that we create in an attempt to convince ourselves that our unhealthy habits cannot be changed... #health #healthyliving #healthyeating #nutrition #nutritiontips #nutritionblog #nutritioncoach #nutritionexpert #weightlossblog #weightlossexpert #weightlossblogger #weightloss #weightlosstips #healthydiet #diet #obesity #dieting #ditchthediet #lifestyle #lifestyleblog #lifestyleblogger #beautyinfluencer #weightlossspecialist #nutritionspecialist #healthexpert

What does your morning look like? do you stay in bed until the last possible second or are you an early bird?
.
here's another important question. do you do something that makes you feel good and happy before you go to work? here's a little nutrinut tip to help you start your morning on a happy note:
.
do a little something special for you every morning. especially when you are feeling super grumpy. that's when you need it the most!
.
and if you are wondering what does this even have to do with nutrition, i've got your answer. as you know, i am madly in love with the topic emotional eating. so naturally my reply will go in that direction. when we are sad, angry, tired, annoyed, we are more likely to search for something to compensate for our mood. many many times, that something is food. sugary, starchy, and processed foods.
.
so you see, it's in your best interest to invest in your mood and emotions. and why not start in the morning!
.
what's my little happy morning secret? music…especially the ones that make me dance. and what's currently my morning cup of coffee music? the movie coco has the most perfect soundtrack. i am particularly in love with proud corazon and un poco loco. i mentally dance (yes, that is totally a thing) to that all day!
.
what are some of your morning jams?

This past weekend was amazing! i accomplished my longest triathlon (750m open water swim; 14 mile bike; 3.1 mile run) to date and i had so much fun doing it. after some reflection i realized that most of my life as a competitive swimmer was all about competing, comparing, winning, training, faster times, and more comparing...i truly forgot what it was like to have fun in the process. i’m really enjoying this new path that i’m on & can’t wait for my next tri adventure! thank you to @kineticmultisports for putting together such a fantastic event! happy monday; enjoy it 😉 #motivationalmonday #triathlon #enjoylife #enjoythejourney #enjoytheprocess #smashfestqueen
