Grass-fed beef: a great source of healthy fats!
red meat gets kind of a bad rep these days, largely due to their high amounts of saturated fat. the main issue isn't the presence of saturated fat, but how the saturated is sourced.
conventional cows are fed a grain-based diet, which means that the meat that ends up on your plate is high in omega 6 fatty acids, which are excessively overconsumed in the modern diet, and tend to be inflammatory for our bodies.
however, if cows are fed grass instead of grains, their fatty acid profile changes dramatically (for the better). the meat from these cows is high in omega 3 fatty acids (the same type of f*t found in salmon). omega 3's are under consumed in most people's diets, and these tend to be anti-inflammatory!
grass-fed meat is also high in a nutrient called cla. cla has anti-cancer properties, can reduce the risk heart disease, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, and even improve body composition.
when reading the labels at the grocery store, try to find "grass-fed" and "grass-finished" beef, which ensures that the cattle has been fed grass for the entirety of its lifetime.
personally, since grass-fed options are significantly more expensive, i load up on them (freezing it for later use) when it's on sale! if i buy conventionally raised beef, i avoid ground beef (it tends to be low quality) and opt for leaner cuts of meat to minimize my intake of omega 6's.
here, since grass-fed beef was on sale, i stocked up! i made a simple stir fry with beef, minced garlic, veggies, seasoning with himalayan pink salt and pepper. easy, nutritious, and tasty!
