Walking next to #elephants the last two days and getting to know this small herd of #rescue elephants as individuals has been amazing. we sleep overlooking where they sleep and watch and learn their movements and behaviors and i am absolutely geeking out on observing their social behavior. this is the matriarch of the herd, #sallytheelephant she’s 29 years old and the sweetest giant. the closest thing they remind me of is #whales . given i am unfamiliar with elephant behaviors i’ve been much more cautious around them than i am around whales who i feel immensely comfortable with. the rescue center has a highly trained staff who are happy to answer questions non stop โค๏ธeach field guide is sensitive to each individual elephant, it’s movements, and what happens when certain individuals approach other specific individuals. we spend the day out mingling right between them so we are adapting to the changing social dynamic which reminds me so much of what my team and i do with the shark research and interaction program back home in #hawaii @oneoceandiving i really appreciate the sensitivity they have to each individual and the dynamic of the group. the staff talk to the elephants when they need to (with their voice and body position) and factor in their eye sight and natural behavior. i am really appreciating learning the unique and subtle differences of such a large species. respecting the similarities between walking beside elephants and my human-shark research and interaction program swimming along side something large and powerful enough to instantly k**l you but intelligent enough not to so long as you adapt your behavior and treat them with the respect they deserve. sadly elephants are killed only for their tusks, the way sharks are killed only for their fins. help put a stop to slaughter by voting and petitioning against the ivory and shark fin trade wherever you are in the world. even if your country or state doesn’t have sharks or elephants they might be like the #stateofgeorgia that imports and exports. #bansharkfinsoup #banivory #saveelephants #helpsavesharks #sallyandco #kep #africa @theapexexpedition photo by my #โค๏ธ๐Ÿฆˆ๐Ÿ˜ @juansharks #oliphant
