The samarii gorge has been known to people since time immemorial. even the ancient authors in their works admiringly described all the unusual, beautiful and very rare fauna of this area.and they used these lands for settlements or building temples. thanks to the excavations, numerous ruins of temples were discovered, which were built in honor of the ancient greek gods, such as artemis and apollo.
in addition, the gorge was impregnable for enemies attacking and served as a safe hiding place.
once upon a time there was a small village called samaria here - a derivative of the "holy mary" - osia maria - sa maria. this was the name of the local church.the village gained fame during the turkish yoke, its heroic confrontation with the turks - they could not master the territory.
in 1962, it was decided to grant the national park status as a gorge to protect an unusual animal and plant life, samaria entered into its structure and gave the name to the gorge.
