Recently a paper was released by ken balcomb revealing that over half of the srkw population born since 1990 have been sired just by two males. this means that there has inevitably been inbreeding within the critically endangered population of just 76 individuals.
-
one of the arguments against captivity is that it has resulted in unnatural inbreeding on numerous occasions e.g. katina’s son taku siring her daughter nalani (pictured). seaworld and its supporters have attempted to rebut this criticism by arguing that as srkw's are inbreeding this behaviour is not unnatural or abnormal, but this would be a glaring distortion of the truth.
-
below i have made some points to explain why, backed up by quotes from marine biologist dr. naomi rose:
-
1) dr. rose: healthy populations of orcas (non-endangered), where similar genetic analyses have been conducted, do not exhibit inbreeding. males mate with unrelated females from other pods.... if you understand the mechanics of natural selection, this makes sense… if inbreeding were normal, without negative consequences and even beneficial, then a lot of species would be doing it, rather than virtually every species out there coming up with various and ingenious ways of avoiding it.
-
2) leading on from this point- the srkw is not a healthy population. they are critically endangered, they are therefore limited in terms of whom they can breed with and so the social rules that normally prevent inbreeding have broken down resulting in this abnormal behaviour. you cannot use the behaviour of a critically endagered population as representative of the behaviour of all healthy wild orca populations. that is just poor science.
-
3) the fact that inbreeding has occurred in a critically endangered wild orca population does not make the act 'ok'. researcher's suspect the srkw's inbreeding has caused increased calf mortality and more males being born than females which is bad for the survival of the population. inbreeding produces unhealthy and genetically compromised individuals that in no way contribute to conservation or can be considered good representatives of their kind.
