I urge you to check out @slavicroma and the work they are doing to bring awareness to the appropriation of romani culture and the use of this all too common word. if you use this word for marketing or defining your style please just stop. especially if you are part if the metaphysical community. read below and check out @slavicroma for the whole post and more information. ・・・
[feel free to repost any of my stuff] gyp** is a slur that has been used to oppress romani people for centuries. so debra, please don’t call yourself a gyp**! it wasn’t your people or your family who were being put into gas chambers with the word stamped on them. you and your family don’t have to worry about the government trying to deport you to a country where you don’t even know the language. you and your family don’t have to worry about being attacked by a group of neo-nazis just for existing. so debra, educate yourself. you are not a gyp** and you don’t want our struggle. call yourself something else.
I’ve developed a sort of odd ritual every time i prepare for the act i’m doing tonight for @genderfvcker #dragcompetition. i procure a newspaper, often stolen off the tube instead of recycled. i take off the staples and spread the pages in front of me. and then i sit down in silence and write anti muslim, islamophobic, xenophobic and racist slurs in red, angry paint over each page. many of them said to me, many said to family members, and many more said to my muslim peers across the country on a daily basis. it’s an incredibly painful and confusing process and i am reminded of that moment when i was 15 years old, and sitting for the 6th hour on an uncomfortable metal chair outside the interview room at newark airport. i was exhausted after an 8 hour flight and just wanted to sleep. it was too bright. it was 6am by then. my father and brother were inside. and there was this sense of dread that i cannot even describe. the fear that even looking at these white, western people a little wrong could mean the difference between deportation and jail. i think we got lucky when we were eventually released god knows how many hours later. but not everyone gets so lucky.

Did you know that? of course, we romani can call each other gypsies as a term of endearment but i cringe if i hear gadje (non-roma) use it. this label was given to us by people who mistakenly believed us to be egyptian. from there evolved the word “gypped” (which i hope you avoid also) which means “cheated, swindled or defrauded.” it is important that we have a say in the words that are used about us. when referring to us, you are welcome to label us as romani or roma.
