I suppose there wasn't any point in looking for anything garoupa-ish when i haven't any idea what a garoupa looks like. i could have read the signs hanging above with fish prices to find out which was garoupa. that wouldn't have worked either because the fish convention below had commenced much earlier before my arrival. the delegates from the various fish tribes and nations had long begun mingling haphazardly on the cold blocks of ice that were keeping them fresh, originally intended to keep them organised under the banner of their own kind; but looking at the state of affairs then, and much to my dismay, it was certainly not to be.
so, i went for the cut fish instead. they should be more well behaved, sitting obediently in neat rows below their banners. my eyes caught something that gave the impression that this might marry well with the sauce i had in mind. next to its neat row queued up another similar looking cut fish. now, what would they be? the price banner would tell me. or so i thought. or it would have - had they been placed right above the fish in display! not!
i looked at the fish again. pretended to look like i knew what i was doing and did the only thing i knew to do to determine the name of this fish. i strode off in pretense confidence and handed the commodity over to the guy at the counter. obligingly, he weighed it, labeled it, and returned my goods to me. grateful, i said thank you. still along the isle, not losing any more time as the curiosity was already too overwhelming, i fumbled with the package as i tried to read the price sticker. lo and behold - i had chosen ikan merah.
and that was the toughest part of my experience in preparing my salted plum steamed fish, which was steamed above fresh corns, steamed over rice. all ready in one sitting, in about 25 minutes 😊
