I am excited to partner up with @alaskaair and announce some great news....they are going straw-less! just to give you an idea americans use 500 million drinking straws every day and used 50 billion plastic water bottles last year. if we can all take a small parts in trying to avoid using everyday plastic we can start to improve our environment’s waste. i start by using a reusable water bottle on hikes and take it to be filled up wherever i go instead of asking for plastic cups and also say no to straws when i am out to eat. it’s hard to be perfect everyday but just the small steps can start to make a big difference. how can you take steps to improve your carbon footprint? @alaskaair #strawlessskies #sponsored thank you : jessgrambau

When you see people going on about how quitting plastic straws won't help our planet... πŸ™„
.
i found this straw on the beach when i was on vacation with my family in florida. the beach was absolutely pristine, yet these pesky straws found their way into the water.
.
i took the #take3forthesea challenge and picked it up to dispose of it properly.
@take3forthesea encourages people to not only do their part, but to do a little bit more.
take 3 pieces of trash from the environment anytime you're outside enjoying it.
.
you picking up 3 items of trash may not change the entire world, but it can cause a chain reaction.
.
tim and i talk in depth about this on my first podcast episode which is finally live!! to learn more check my stories and let me know what you think.
i am so excited to hear your feedback.
.
p.s. i am not in favor of restricting the use of straws to those who need them. please do not twist my words.

Low impact living is opening my eyes
.
for everyone that means something different and for everyone different things are possible and/or important. for me it meant ditching animal source foods therefore living plant based in the beginning. but rapidly it would grow into something so much bigger. .
i started to open my eyes not only to the cruelty of the animal farming industries but also to human rights, racism, feminism, compassion and kindness. i got interested in the zero waste movement and the low impact movement (@lowimpactmovement ). .
i got inspired by so many lovely, amazing human beings e.g. @gittemary @stevieyaaaay @sustainably_vegan @earthlinged - just to name a few. and i am so thankful. i was interested in these topics a long time ago, but i get daily motivation and inspiration from these kind humans to keep going and trying to live a life with less impact on this wonderful planet earth even when it isnt always easy or the most comfortable. sometimes it is emotionally draining to dig deep into these topics but it is so worth it.

Productivity hack-
create a work space that feels clutter free and only has items you use and love.
.
sustainability hack -
prioritize second hand materials. not everything on my desk is second hand, but i always check multiple places for second hand goods before i purchase something new
.
for instance, these head phone were on my wish list for years! (after using my entire family's stock pile of apple headphones)
i finally broke down and decided i would buy the headphones. but before i did i made one last stop to ebay. sure enough! i found someone selling the exact pair i wanted for half price!
so i guess that's a money saving hack as well!
sustainability can be as inexpensive or as expensive as you choose to make it.

When they tell you one person can't make a difference 😏
.
maybe we can't change the world on our own, but together we absolutely can.
ya feel me? πŸ’ͺπŸ½πŸ‘ŒπŸ’š
.
someday's it is very easy to get upset over how far we have to go in terms of sustainability, but today i'm feeling more positive than ever about how far we've come

repost from @noel_russ - as lovers of wild spaces, we believe it’s important to preserve the places we play for generations to-come. recently, @alaskaair announced that they are going straw-less on all of their flights in order to minimize their impact on our planet. this inspired me to share the steps we’re taking daily to reduce our carbon footprint while out on the road.
one of the simplest ways to help cut down on waste, is by using reusable water bottles. we travel with a handful of them – a couple for us, a couple for the dogs – and we carry them wherever we go: on the trail, on the river, at the crag. these bottles can easily be refilled wherever potable water is provided – usually gas stations and grocery stores, but sometimes campgrounds, restaurants and rest stops. if water quality is questionable – you can always carry purifying tablets, or try a water bottle with a built in filter! we also love bringing our own mug when we stop by our favorite coffee shops – they keep our drinks warm for longer than any disposable cup, and sometimes we even get a discount for doing so!
how do you challenge yourself to reduce your carbon footprint? share your thoughts using #strawlessskies for a chance to win two flight vouchers to whichever alaska airlines destination your adventurous heart desires! #iflyalaska #ad.

So thrilled to be named as the @fromthebowseat gold award winner. they are an amazing organization that helps promote youth action! a big thanks to @noplasticstraws for being my advisor for this award and always sharing your knowledge. this picture was taken at sacramento the day #nostrawnovember passed the senate! #repost @fromthebowseat ・・・
meet shelby o’neil, a 17-year-old student in san juan bautista, california, and young founder of @jr.ocean.guardians. her campaign #nostrawnovember earned the gold award (a $5,000 scholarship) in our 2018 #marinedebris creative advocacy competition! πŸŽ‰
shelby raised awareness about a pervasive form of marine debris – single-use #plasticstraws – by challenging individuals worldwide to refuse them for an entire month. she also contacted corporate executives to encourage them to reduce or eliminate their use of plastic straws in their business operations, successfully convincing @alaskaair, dignity health, and farmer brothers coffee to do so. through her leadership, shelby is helping create a shift away from our "throwaway" culture and helping to prevent tens of millions of plastic straws from ending up in the ocean every year.

Okay... i know most zero wasters tell you to use what you have... that you don't need excess items and you don't need any of the trendy items either. but here's my justification for all of these beautiful bottles πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‰
.
from left to right - the first bottle i found at goodwill recently for $1! i want to give it to someone who needs it.
.
the second bottle is my bottle that used to sit at my desk at work. it was my one and only bottle when i acquired it (that i was aware of... i'll get to it πŸ™„)
.
the third bottle was found at our community garden. we saw it once and left it because we figured someone had just forgot it. but then a month later it was still sitting outside in the weather and we figured it was fair game πŸ˜‚ that is now madison's bottle she takes to get tea.
.
the fourth bottle is the first insulated bottle i ever bought, in 2013. it made it through college with me, road trips, hiking trips, and my move to california and back. then somehow it got lost... and that's how i ended up with the second bottle. then this one turned up literally two years later. but it is still my favorite, and the one that keeps my drinks coldest the longest.
.
the fifth bottle is the bottle madison bought me for my birthday so that i would have a bottle at home and at work... before we found bottle number 4 πŸ™ƒ
.
last bottle is just madison's water bottle, plain and simple.
.
so here's my point with all this... yeah it's great to be a minimalist. yeah the picture perfect zero waste kitchens are cool, but it's okay if that's not your reality.
one day you may forget your water bottle at home and one day you may lose it forever. i just want to reinforce that you do not have to be perfect to make progress.
.
do you have a zero waste swap that has a story? we all wanna know πŸ‘‡

We are big fans of both @shelbizleee and @sustainably_vegan, we've been following them for quite some time. they've inspired us in many ways, we especially love the way they both shine light on the idea of not being perfect we are still going to create waste, we can all only do the best we can.
we would love to hear who you follow to keep you inspired on this low impact journey, let us know in the comments below.

i am so grateful for this incredible woman and this community.
many people have a negative view of social media, and there are (of course) evident reasons why.

however, social media can also be used in such beautiful ways.
it has not only connected me with @sustainably_vegan, but it has also connected both of us with all of you.

we spoke a lot over the last couple days about how to be the best activists we can be to evoke change within each of our communities, but we cannot do it without you, or social media.

so here's to celebrating all of us and all we have done thus far πŸ’™ #zerowaste #plasticfree #minimalism #ecofriendly #sustainable #minimalist #environmentallyfriendly #strawlessskies #zerowastelifestyle #wastefree #goinggreen #ourplanetourhome #zerowastelife #bezero #zerowastehome #zerowastecollective #zerowasteliving #wastefree #sustainability #nowaste #lesswaste #reducewhatyouproduce #choosetorefuse #thelowimpactmovement #lowimpact #attainablesustainability #lowimpactmovement #yayforearth #consciouslifestylebaby

Some people see an eco-lifestyle as a lifestyle of deprivation.
but i see it as quite the opposite. i traded meaningless shopping for blissful sunshine and convenience for consciousness 🌿

When you choose to live a minimal and non-consumerist lifestyle, you get excited about things like second hand mason jars with flower petals on them πŸ™ƒ
.
but really... changing your mindset to only purchase things that bring you pure joy can change your entire outlook on life and i highly recommend it πŸ’•

do you have something simple and silly that makes you smile? let me know πŸ‘‡
