With the recent bushfires that tore through the north-east gippsland area, alot of businesses that see their busiest times during this time of year took a huge hit, including those not at all close to the fires, with a lot of tourists scared off and associating the whole area as dangerous, including south gippsland, which is several 100kms away from the actual bushfires.
while some areas are still closed off and only open to locals and emergency services, there are plenty of places within victoria crying out for business, and you may have seen a campaign called #emptyesky, urging people to visit rural areas in victoria and nsw, and participate in the local economy as a show of support and solidarity.
that's why tim and i, this australia long weekend, took our van and camped and surfed out in foster/sandy point.
not only shopping at the local iga, we also went to a farmer's market in foster, where we bought kasundi and some jams made from local produce, and bees wax wrap (so we don't have to use single use plastic cling film anymore). we even went to an op shop where i scored a perfectly working 5mm winter surfing wetsuit for $20 (brand new a winter wetsuit goes for anywhere between $350-$600), and a cool painting for $30 (originally priced at $50, but the asian in me bargained it down). honestly the things you find when you explore your own backyard 😌
